Sherborne Chamber Choir

Sherborne Chamber Choir We're an auditioned choir of around 45, performing 16C to 21C music around Sherborne.

Find out about our forthcoming concerts at https://sherbornechamberchoir.org.uk/forthcoming-concerts/ Formed in 1979, Sherborne Chamber Choir is made up of around forty members from Sherborne and the surrounding area who all enjoy singing a wide range of music, from the sixteenth century to the present day. Conducted for most of that time by Paul Ellis, over the years we have built up a reputation

throughout the region and further afield for the high standard of our performances and regularly give concerts with some of this country’s top soloists and orchestral players. We have a long standing informal relationship with Sherborne Abbey, giving three varied concerts a year there, as well as singing for occasional services. Recent programmes include Bach St Matthew Passion and Handel Israel in Egypt with period orchestra, Bob Chilcott Canticles of Light, Jonathan Dove Missa Brevis, and Praetorius Mass for Christmas Day. Further afield we have sung at Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, in San Gimignano and Siena Cathedral, Italy, Bruges, and most recently Croatia. Our first CD, Comfort, Life and Love, was launched in 2008, in aid of St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice and hospices throughout the country, and has raised thousands of pounds to date. More recently we recorded Carols from Sherborne Abbey with Sherborne Abbey Choir, launched in December 2015. Like all choirs, we were unable to meet very much during the Pandemic, and our fortieth anniversary season had to be put on hold, so we’re delighted to be together again now and back in action!

We're enjoying Joanna Marsh's Evening prayer which we're performing in our next concert.

A contemporary choral work composed in 2019, with a luminous and atmospheric quality.

The piece is a setting of a prayer by Lancelot Andrewes (1555–1626) from his Preces Privatae (Private Prayers). The text reflects on the transition from the day into evening and, metaphorically, from life into the afterlife.

It was commissioned by the ensemble Sonoro for their "Choral Inspirations" project. Joanna Marsh wrote the piece as a contemporary companion to Josef Rheinberger’s "Abendlied" another piece which we will also be performing.

Having promised you more info on the program of our upcoming concert on the 20th June, I doubted myself in the use of the word 'vignettes', so I asked AI and this was the response:

Key Characteristics of a Musical Vignette
Brevity: They are almost always short, often lasting only a minute or two.

Atmospheric: Rather than having a clear "beginning, middle, and end" like a symphony, a vignette acts more like a musical snapshot or a "slice of life."

Simplicity: They often feature a single instrument (like a solo piano) or a small ensemble to maintain an intimate feel.

Although Howells Magnificat probably doesn't fall into the above description, many of the beautiful pieces we'll be performing do, such as Eriks Esenvalds 'Stars', Lauridsen's 'Sure on this Shining Night', Parry's 'Lighten our Darkness' and Whitacre's 'Sleep'.

These pieces are a joy to sing and 🤞 that will come across in our performance, so grab your tickets - starting price £7 for an evening of emotive music, can't be bad!
