The song Sunshine on Leith by The Proclaimers was a huge inspiration behind How Could I Forget?

So we thought it’d be rude not to head down to Sheffield institution, The Grapes and get Joe to play it! 🎹

Long before How Could I Forget? Joe’s grandad was singing this one…

‘Murder in the Chip Shop’ is an old Glaswegian street song that writer Joe Carnall remembers his own grandad singing and now it’s found its way into the show, performed by Grandad Jack.

A little piece of family history brought to the stage! ❤️

Jean and Jack are back in the 1960s, having just had a row about Jack going to the pub and having the freedom to do what he wants, while Jean is left keeping the wheels turning at home.

The song ‘I Stay’ sees Jean reflect on the life she could have lived, the things she could have done and the person she could have become.

There’s something special about Sheffield! ❤️

It’s a city built on music, creativity and culture, and we’re incredibly proud that How Could I Forget? was born here.

While the story itself could belong to any family, it’s been amazing to create it in a place that champions the arts and then take it to audiences across England.

Here’s Joe Carnall Jnr, Ed Cosens & Gerry sharing what Sheffield means to them! 🫶
