🎹 Fortepiano Recital: Expressive Style 🎹

Join us for an extraordinary evening with acclaimed pianist John Reid, returning to Salisbury to perform music of the eighteenth century on a beautiful fortepiano based on the instruments known to Mozart, Haydn and CPE Bach.

A former Salisbury Cathedral chorister and organ scholar, John Reid brings his sensitivity and style to a programme exploring the dramatic and emotional world of the Empfindsamer Stil ("sensitive style"). The programme will feature music by

✨ CPE Bach
✨ Haydn
✨ Other early Classical composers

Hear these remarkable works performed on a copy of Mozart's own Walter fortepiano. Walter was the most famous piano maker in Vienna in the late eighteenth century. His instruments were known for their bright, clear tone. This copy was made in the late 1980s by Paul McNulty for Trevor Pinnick.

A rare opportunity to hear this fascinating repertoire on the instrument for which it was written.

🎶 Early Music at Salisbury Cathedral ⛪

One of the highlights of this year's Salisbury Musick is the return of early music to Salisbury Cathedral, one of the principal venues of the original Salisbury music festivals in the 18th Century.

On Sunday 4 October, the Cathedral Choir will include music from the period in three services, offering a wonderful opportunity to experience historic repertoire in its liturgical setting.

Service Times:
🎵 Mattins 9.15am–10.15am
🎵 Eucharist 10.30am–11.30am
🎵 Choral Evensong 4.30pm–5.30pm

Whether you are a regular worshipper, an early music enthusiast, or simply curious to hear the Cathedral Choir perform music inspired by Salisbury's rich musical heritage, you are warmly invited to attend.

Details of the music being performed will be published approximately two weeks before the festival on the Salisbury Cathedral website.

🎻 Discovering Early Music – Playing with History 🎻

Ever wondered how Baroque music sounded when it was written? Join the wonderful Nocturnalia for a practical workshop at The Salisbury Museum exploring the art of historically informed performance.

Designed for string teachers and competent adult string players, the session will explore:

✨ historical analysis
✨ continuo (using a small spinet provided)
✨ ornamentation

🎻 The Musical Soul: The History of the Violin Bow 🎻

We're delighted that our Patron, Margaret (Maggie) Faultless, will be joining us at The Salisbury Museum on Saturday afternoon for a fascinating exploration of the violin bow.

Described by many composers as "the soul of the music", the bow has played a vital role in shaping musical expression through the centuries. But which came first: composers pushing the boundaries of what music could say, or instrument and bow makers developing new technologies to help performers realise those ideas?

In this engaging talk, Maggie Faultless will explore the evolving relationship between composers, performers and instrument makers, tracing the remarkable development of the violin bow and its influence on the music we know today.

As one of the world's leading specialists in historical performance, Maggie brings exceptional insight to this subject, making this a rare opportunity to learn from a true expert.

What a great concert this afternoon by Early Bird baroque - full of nature, melody and harmony. So pleased that Early Bird are performing again in the festival this year. The full programme will be launched on the evening of Thursday 14th May so not long to wait. Friends priority booking runs until the end of May and general booking opens on June 1st.
