On the 17th September, 2017, two new Banksy artworks appeared in London on the walls of the Barbican centre, before being later confirmed by the artist on his Instagram later that day. These works corresponded with a major exhibit of the work of American street artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988), which was being shown at the Barbican.

The one featured here is Banksy’s unique take on Basquiat's “Boy and dog in a Johnnypump”, which you can see in its original form if you swipe across.

Accompanying his announcement of the works, Banksy said “Major new Basquiat show opens at the Barbican – a place that is normally very keen to clean any graffiti from its walls”. Amusingly, the artwork has been protected and is still viewable today!

On this day in 2006, Banksy had just opened his groundbreaking LA warehouse show "Barely Legal", which was later labelled a "three-day vandalised warehouse extravaganza".

His third major exhibition after Turf War and Crude Oil, Barely Legal caused an immediate stir and took headlines by featuring a live elephant painted in a pink and gold floral wallpaper pattern, as part of a work called “Elephant In The Room”.

in 2017, an alternative art show called Art the Arms Fair was staged in London, in protest of one of the world's largest military arms fairs being hosted in the city at the time. The week-long exhibition deliberately coincided with the DSEI Arms Fair was held in Tower Hamlets and brought together the work of artists such as Guerrilla Girls, Peter Kennard, Darren Cullen & Banksy.

Banksy’s contribution to the art fair was this childlike drawing, in which the message of the work becomes clear beyond the frame. The work helped to raise awareness for the cause after it was shared to Banksy's Instagram, before it was later auctioned off for charity in support of Campaign Against Arms Trade and Reprieve.

Back in 2006, in response to the release of Paris Hilton's debut music album, Banksy planted 500 specially edited copies of his own version in 48 record shops across the UK.

Everything about the edited copies had been altered by the artist; from the music on the CD through to the entire CD booklet, however - the case featured the correct barcode to the original release so that those purchasing the CD would be unaware until they got home and noticed!

The images featured in the booklet were changed to feature Paris Hilton set against a backdrop homeless citizens sleeping on the streets of LA, as well as photos featuring her head superimposed on the body of a mannequin, whilst each page featured a comment by the artist.

The CD itself was mixed by Banksy and Danger Mouse, featuring one track lasting for forty minutes and Banksy signed each one personally as 'Paris x'.

Amusingly, no copies were ever returned to any of the stores for a replacement.

Toxic Mary first appeared as an original work in 2003, as part of Banksy's "Turf War" exhibition. In this work, classical renaissance imagery of the Virgin Mary and an infant baby is used to voice the artist’s combined anti-religious and anti-capitalist criticism.

The release of these limited edition screen prints later followed, in Banksy's characteristic stencilled style.

This Banksy street mural appeared on the wall of a private residence in Southampton, UK, back in 2010.

A deeply moving artwork, this piece will be remembered as one of of Banksy's most short-lived public works, after it was whitewashed over by an unknown protester only hours after its discovery. What a shame!

A standout work on canvas from our private collection: "Brace Yourself" by Banksy shows the grim reaper riding a dodgem car.

The story behind this unique work is a funny one, as it was originally gifted by Banksy to a man called Simon Duncan, after the artist used the name of Simon's band "Exit Through The Gift Shop" for the title of his 2010 film.

"Walls on Fire" was an open air street art exhibition put together by Banksy and his collaborator Inkie, which ran for two days in Bristol from the 22nd August in 1998.

This exhibition was organised in agreement with the Bristol town hall - a change from Banksy's later developed gorilla style!

On this day in 2015, Banksy opened Dismaland to the British Public!

Dismaland was a temporary art project amusingly billed as a "Bemusement Park", organised and financed by Banksy in the British seaside town of Weston-super-Mare.

The attraction featured works by 58 artists and activists in addition to artwork created by Banksy himself. These collaborators included Damien Hirst, Jenny Holzer and Jimmy Cauty amongst overs, whilst the attraction received over 150,000 visitors!

Prepared in secret, the pop-up exhibition was intended as “a sinister twist on Disneyland”, runing from 21/08/2015 through to September 27th, 36 days later.

Banksy described it as a “family theme park unsuitable for children."

Our exhibition consists of some of the best examples of Banksy’s commercial artwork from across his career; curated, authenticated and soon to be presented in our purpose built space.

The pieces on display are all privately owned, purchased by individuals from Banksy himself. The common thread that links these works is that their owners want to share them with the public, as opposed to the works gathering dust in their house or storage. They believe they should be seen, whilst we are delighted to be able to show them to you at The Art of Banksy exhibition. Full details coming soon!

Unfortunately the list of Banksy's public murals that have been damaged, defaced or destroyed is an extensive one!

The reasons range significantly, from other graffiti artists who seek to tag over his work, to local councils who remove works as acts of graffiti, right through to individuals who remove entire walls to keep the works for themselves.

Luckily, many are preserved with perspex and left on display for the world to see and enjoy. For those who are interested in travelling the world to see many of Banksy's most significant public works, we highly recommend Tapies Xavier's book "Desperately Seeking Banksy". For a more condensed anthology of Banksy's most prolific original and authenticated prints, canvasses, screenprints, unique works and limited-edition pieces, we will be announcing the details of our new exhibition very soon! 🎈

Have you visited the coast yet this summer? 🦀

This Banksy mural was painted on a beach sea wall in Cromer, Norfolk - a town famed for both its crab industry and cost of housing.

In a commentary on social justice and equality, this work showcases crabs without shells, unable to get them as they are being offered as luxury rentals. Through this powerful image, Banksy suggests that the protection of a shell (or home) is a natural right and necessity.

At the time that this artwork appeared, Cromer council leader Tim Adams said that "The poignant message here is in terms of the housing crisis locally... We have 2,500 people on our housing waiting list, and at the same time some 5,400 second homes here."

11/08/2022

On this day back in 2004, Banksy began distributing his personalised version of the British £10 note amongst crowds at major events and festivals in the UK.

These notes were so similar to the real thing that they were easily mistaken as legal currency, with recipients using them to buy drinks, food and merchandise at the festivals. Upon closer inspection the differences are more obvious - Banksy substituted the portrait of HRM Queen Elizabeth II with that of Diana, Princess of Wales, whilst on the back was written "Banksy of England" in place of bank.

We're pleased to have a number of these works in our curated private collection, which will be available to view in person in our upcoming exhibition.

The wait is finally over! Following a successful year-long run in London and critical acclaim around the world, The Art of Banksy Exhibition Is coming to MediaCity, Salford next month! MediaCityUK
On Monday, Red Ant’s social committee, Anterprise, arranged a trip to see The Art of Banksy London exhibition near Covent Garden.

The group loved it as it gave them a chance to spend time outside the office and see some wonderful art. As we come closer to Summer, the office can't wait to do more excursions out in the sun!

Was almost ruined by the rudeness of the security guard at the door !!! Spoke to me very nasty, laughing at himself at his disgusting behaviour ,not professional at all ,what a let down to a paying member of the public, seemed he needed to grow up the child
