Meet the legendary Dolly Peel of South Shields whose story we’ll be sharing within our Wonderbox series!

Dolly Peel was known as the "Queen of the Smugglers" due to her smuggling activities and her defiance against the Press Gangs during the Napoleonic Wars. Folklore suggests that she hid men beneath her petticoat skirts to avoid detection.

Here is 'A Sea View of South Shields and Whitburn: View of the Herd Groyne and Souter Lighthouse,' which we are creating for our Wonderbox project focused on the South Tyneside region. The view consists of multiple scenes combined with folded paper to create a three dimensional sense of space. The final version will be placed inside a box with a peephole, through which the view can be seen.

We're prototyping a paper peep show that showcases the coastline between South Shields and Whitburn for our forthcoming Wonderbox project. The front of the peep show usually features a title page with a circular hole for viewing. To enhance the coastal theme, we’re incorporating a star compass motif to frame the view into the box.

We’ve been exploring iconic architecture in Berwick-upon-Tweed for a shortlisted artist residency commission as part of the Living Barracks cultural development project. The historic site of Berwick Barracks is undergoing a major refurbishment to revitalize empty buildings and spaces, transforming them into a vibrant new home for the town's archives and collections, contemporary visual art, and the Kings Own Scottish Borderers Regimental Museum, all situated within a single landmark location.

We have been researching some of the iconic coastal landmarks and stories of South Tyneside to include in our crafted 3-D paper scenes for our Wonderbox project. One notable landmark is Souter Point Lighthouse, situated between South Shields and Whitburn. It was the first lighthouse in the world designed to use alternating electric current, representing the most advanced technology of its time.
