Lotus
150 × 100 cm, oil on canvas

I am so grateful for the models I work with.
It starts with a photoshoot, and I’ve no idea where the painting is going to go.

I started painting to get to know myself, to heal my own pain, to sit with myself.
And now that I’ve made peace with so much, I love trying to capture the people I am lucky enough to paint.

My connection with her was formed through her positive energy and humour.

This was the only shot where she wasn’t smiling.
It was a look. A look of transition and reflection.

There’s a hint of her tattoos on her shoulder, often unseen. A rose, a poppy, a chrysanthemum, a daffodil and a lotus.

Tattoos that have deep value and presence.
Spiritual meaning and connection to her family.

These became the background. Showing her and showing what is hidden in full bloom.

They are not decoration. They are memory. They are lineage.

She and the flowers scream colour. I still don’t know why I chose black and white.

I love the scene, the pose, the darkness of the lily pond and the skies. The sunlight breaking through in the background complements the bright light of the flowers.

This is Lotus.
A small pause in a much bigger story.

If it speaks to you, I’d love to hear what part.

“This painting has quietly transformed me over the past eight months, patiently waiting for me to share it. During this slower season of creativity, I’ve often reflected on Chapter 2 of the Dao De Jing:
‘When people see beauty as beauty, ugliness arises.’
Lao Tzu reminds us that labelling something as beautiful automatically creates its opposite—ugliness. Perhaps true beauty lies beyond such definitions, existing, instead, in the deeper ways we experience someone or something.
Inspired by the depth and ‘beauty’ of , this artwork has gently nudged me toward growth, gratitude, and a richer understanding of perception itself.”
