Congrats to all the nominees for the 2026 Parliamentary Jazz Awards, including some great musicians who've graced our stages in recent times 🤩

As you can see, we've made the shortlist - woo hoo! (even if we've mistakenly gained a 'The' at the beginning and a gap in the name SoundCellar, ha ha!)

We're of course feeling extremely chuffed at being recognised, so thank you to our lovely audiences for getting us to where we are today. We'd love you to help us continue well into the future too, hopefully along with some new friends 🙏

They made their live debut as aramii at SoundCellar in Feb 2024, but they're both so busy with lots of other projects that this is a rare beast!

So it's simply compulsory that we make sure you know about this new track released today by the fantastic Maria Chiara Argirò & Jamie Leeming

Download it at Bandcamp here:

or stream it (if you must) on your favourite platform

Final day at the 50th NN North Sea Jazz Festival (only my 24th!) bookended by two Brit artists helping to take the jazz 'mantle' on into the future.

1. SHABAKA with the always excellent Sam Jones Sam Jones (difficult choice to miss Maria Schneider Orchestra on at the same time, for what would have been my 6th time!)
2. Tineke Postma represents the very best of Dutch jazz...this year featuring the enigmatic Theo Bleckmann on voice & 'loud' suit 😂
3. Currently two of the most lauded musicians on the planet Cecile McLorin Salvant & Sullivan Fortner
4. SoundCellar multi-visitor Emma Rawicz (ra-vich) with one of THE gigs of the whole festival, backed by more fabulous musicians well known to SoundCellar audiences David Preston Jamie Murray + yet to play SC scottie thompson Live performances of tracks from her excellent latest album included this snippit from 'Anima Rising' (spot the Joni Mitchell reference😊)

More SoundCellar associations with day 2 of NN North Sea Jazz Festival but the first video clip was the 'star' set of the day:

1. Nils Petter Molvaer was as fantastic as when I first saw him (in the UK and in Den Haag!) in 1998. Eivind Aarset & exceptional, as always
2. Day 2 opened with Anouar Brahem أنور ابراهم with a rare welcome sighting of
3. SoundCellar lockdown 'In Our Own Space' legend Bill Frisell always superb - this time with Rudy Royston & Gregory Tardy
4. Even the ad hoc performances here are great... this one on the Central Stage (where many stopped to watch, incl me!) These young musicians caught my attention, fronted here by
5. Another SoundCellar 'In Our Own Space' legend Camila Meza returning to NSJ 7 years after I first saw her here. Glad to finally meet her 'for real' following her live streaming gig for us in 2021 (check out our website live videos pages https://soundcellar.org/videos/2/). I still recall her telling us how many times promoters and venues assume she's 'only' the singer, so here's proof of why they get it so wrong 😂

Two thirds of the SoundCellar team are at Swanage Jazz Festival this w'end, but this third is at my 24th NN North Sea Jazz Festival

Day 1 and almost certainly what will be the highlight of the whole festival: the phenomenon that is Esperanza Spalding (i.n.) this time with simply a trio of Eric Doob and SoundCellar legend Matthew Stevens

1. Clip of 'Thang (hips)' from 2018's '12 Little Spells' album
2. Perfect opening for my NSJ'26...a supergroup of Questlove Christian McBride &Robert Glasper here playing an appropriate little bit of Miles Davis in their set
3. More jazz royalty Gonzalo Rubalcaba Chris Potter & Eric Harland
4. esperanza (no capital e) plays a mean electric too, of course
5. Liverpool Football Club fans probably don't know this is actually a 1945 Rodgers & Hammerstein song with deep meaning...a perfect encore!
6. Magnificent trio
7. Following my published UKJazzNews review of her 2025 album (https://ukjazznews.com/patricia-brennan-of-the-near-and-far/), it was great to see Patricia Brennan with a fabulous sextet to finish off my day one
