🎶Meet the Choir — Introducing Jeremy Wells🎶

Next up in our Meet the Choir series, we’re delighted to introduce Jeremy Wells — a long-standing member of the choir and our Concert Organiser for Devon ‘and Beyond’!

Voice Part: 2nd Tenor
Role: Concert Organiser
Time in Choir: Since April 2006

Q: How long have you been in the choir?
A: Since April 2006! Jeremy has been part of the choir since its inception and remains a key member today.

Q: What voice part do you sing?
A: 2nd Tenor

Q: Do you have a favourite song or genre?
A: Jeremy says there are many favourites, but Nella Fantasia and The Evening Prayer are right at the top — both beautiful pieces with meaningful words, despite being very different in style.

Q: How did you get involved with the choir?
A: While attending a local MVC concert in Cornwall, Jeremy met an ex-colleague who was planning to join. He decided to give it a go and has never looked back! He especially values the strong social side of the choir and, as Concert Organiser, enjoys meeting a wide range of interesting people — many of whom have become lasting friends. He’s even been known to join rehearsals in Denmark with Sangkoret Arion, often finishing with the lovely piece Nocturne.

Q: What did you do for a living?
A: Jeremy’s background is in farming, including time at Sparsholt Agriculture College. His career took him abroad too, working in Denmark and Norway in pig production and genetics — fascinating and varied experiences!

Q: Tell us a fun fact or hobby!
A: There are plenty! From singing on the foredeck of HMY Britannia to spontaneous public performances. Jeremy enjoys moorland and Scandinavian walking, entomology, and has a lifelong passion for beekeeping — which he’s been doing since 1974. Since retiring, he’s taken great pleasure in mentoring new beekeepers, forming friendships along the way

🎉 Celebrating 20 Years Of Music! 🍾

Last Friday we gathered together at Yelverton Golf Club to celebrate the Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir’s 20th anniversary.

Choir members, their guests, and friends of the choir all enjoyed a fantastic evening, featuring a choir-themed quiz masterminded by our own Ray Stenning, along with a delicious meal and a varied raffle.

We were delighted to welcome back our founding Musical Director, Rosemary Cole BEM, who joined current MD Sarah Gard in cutting the anniversary cake — a wonderful moment shared alongside our chairman, Charles Westlake.

As we celebrate this milestone, we look ahead to the future with excitement and gratitude for our shared love of music-making. Here’s to many more years of singing together! 🎶

🎶Meet the Choir — Introducing Ray Stenning🎶

Next up in our Meet the Choir series, we’re delighted to introduce one of our longest-serving members: Ray S!

Voice Part: Baritone
Time in Choir: 18 years, since 2008 — just two years after the choir began!

Q: When did you join the choir?
A: Ray joined in 2008, only two years after the choir was formed — so he has witnessed a significant part of its history.

Q: What’s your favourite song to sing?
A: An almost impossible choice! Currently, his favourite is Away From The Roll Of The Sea. The choir first learned it when they sang with the Men Of Cornwall at the Royal Albert Hall in 2012, and it has recently been revived. It brings back many special memories.

Q: How did you get involved with the choir?
A: Ray’s wife, Margaret, spotted an advert in the local paper for a “Come and Try It” session in Tavistock. He had sung in his school choir many years earlier and had also been part of a singing group at his London Rugby Club. That group progressed from traditional rugby songs to entering a competition — winning on their second attempt — and even performed their original song on BBC Radio London.

Initially, Ray assumed the choir would be full of highly accomplished, sight-reading musicians, but with a little encouragement from Margaret, he decided to give it a go — and the rest, as they say, is history. What Ray found was a diverse range of musical abilities where everyone learns together and supports each other in their section.

Q: What did you do for a living?
A: Over the years, Ray worked as a Cartographic Draughtsman, a Teacher of PE and English, and a University Lecturer in Sports Science. He later ran his own small training company for health and fitness trainers.

Balancing work and choir life was easier in younger years, but singing with such a sociable group has always provided a wonderful contrast to a busy working life — a chance to relax, lift the spirits, and enjoy the power of music. Being part of the choir continues to bring him real pleasure and enjoyment.

Q: Are you involved in any other musical activities?
A: Ray enjoys playing piano, guitar and harmonica (all by ear). He sings and plays harmonica with the Tavi Edge Singers, sings with the Tavistock Sultans of Sing, and serves on the committee for the Tavistock Fringe Festival.

Q: Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
A: Ray loves walking and cycling on Dartmoor. He performs with the Tavistock Edge Players and has even been known to haunt the Tavistock Abbey Still Tower as Brother Egbert the apothecary!

🎶 Meet the Choir – Introducing Geoff Gunning 🎶

We’re kicking off our new Meet the Choir series with long-standing member of the choir: Geoff Gunning!

Voice Part: 2nd Tenor
Role: Choir Secretary
Time in Choir: 12 years

Q: How long have you been in the choir?
A: 12 wonderful years! Geoff was enlisted by our previous MD, and what started as a simple invitation has grown into something that’s now a really important and beloved part of his life.

Q: What voice part do you sing?
A: 2nd Tenor

Q: Do you have a favourite song?
A: Geoff says he loves them all (a very diplomatic answer!), but he particularly enjoys singing Calm Is the Sea. He’s also renowned by the choir for his lead in The Fields of Athenry.

Q: Do you have a role in the choir beyond singing?
A: Yes! Geoff is also our Choir Secretary — organised, reliable, and a key part of keeping everything running smoothly.

Q: Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
A: Geoff spends much of his time happily spoiling a whippet called Dylan — who you will sometimes see at our concerts if you’re lucky!

🎶 New Year, New Voices! 🎶

As we step into a new year, why not try something uplifting, social, and genuinely enjoyable? The Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir is excited to welcome new singers — you don’t need any previous experience or read music notation, just enthusiasm and a love of singing.

We sing a wide range of music from Elvis Presley right through to the classics! There is something for everyone’s tastes.

Whether you’re a seasoned singer or more of a “sing-in-the-shower” type, you’ll find a friendly, supportive group, and the buzz of making music together. Alongside rehearsals and concerts, there’s a great social side, too — friendships, fun, and shared experiences are at the heart of what we do.

✨ Come and try a rehearsal
📍 Callington Methodist Church Hall
🕢 Tuesdays at 7.30 pm

🎄 What a way to round off the year! 🎄

We wrapped up the year last week with a wonderfully festive Christmas party, full of freely sung carols, a lovely buffet, and lots of laughter — all enjoyed in the great company of choir members, our guests, and special friends of the Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir.

A huge thank you goes to our baritone Ray, who brilliantly organised and led the party games. The undoubted highlight was his fantastic Pass the Parcel, with a good-spirited forfeit hidden beneath every layer before the much-anticipated prize was finally revealed!

The (very sporting!) forfeits included:

🎶 Charles (1st Tenor & Chairman) singing in the grand style of Pavarotti
🎤 Eric (newly returning member) delivering a speech in the style of Churchill
🎵 Ivan (1st Tenor & Treasurer) performing Do You Hear What I Hear?
🎭 Chris G (our fantastic page-turner and wife of 2nd Tenor & Secretary Geoff) impersonating Joyce Grenfell at a TVMVC committee meeting
📜 Richard (Baritone) reciting a hilarious poem about an employee’s unfortunate excuse for missing work
👨‍💼 Geoff G (2nd Tenor & Secretary) bravely tackling karaoke with Right Said Fred
🦃 Angus (Bass & Cornwall Concert Organiser) sharing a unique poem from the perspective of a Christmas turkey — complete with a wonderful accent!
💔 Sarah (Musical Director) and Ray teaming up for a duet of Don’t Go Breaking My Heart
🎄 Bob (1st Tenor) leading everyone in a rousing verse of We Wish You a Merry Christmas

And congratulations to Tom (bass), who finally unwrapped the prize!

We also enjoyed a riddles round and a “guess the Christmas song played backwards” challenge — all adding to a brilliant evening of festive fun.

🎄 Merry Christmas from all of us at the TVMVC. Thank you to everyone who has supported our concerts this year — we look forward to seeing many familiar faces in 2026 and welcoming plenty of new ones, too! 🎄

We had a great time performing at Plymouth Methodist Central Hall last weekend for our final concert of the year! 🎶

Below are a couple of behind-the-scenes views: a unique perspective from the sunken organ pit as the audience made their way in, and a snapshot of some of the TVMVC men warming up together in the break room before the concert.

The programme featured a wonderful variety of contributions, including solos from tenor 1 and chairman, Charles; an in-piece monologue during When a Child is Born, beautifully spoken by Geoff (tenor 2 and secretary); handbells for The Christmas Bells provided by one of our newest recruits, Robin (bass); a fun, festive piano duet version of Skaters’ Waltz performed by our Musical Director, Sarah, and our accompanist, Josh; and Josh also treated us to an organ solo during the evening.

We were delighted that proceeds from the concert went to Children’s Hospice South West — that offers invaluable support not only to children, but to their families as well, often in ways people may not initially realise.

Thank you to everyone who came along to support us and made it such an enjoyable evening.
