Current status: Deep in the creative flow

Social media takes a backseat when the process gets intense, so snippets are all I've got for now. This has been a long stint and but we are so close—some things are coming together for September!

In the meantime, enjoy this 100% real photo of me in the jungle (and definitely not outside spray painting with something behind me I can't share yet 😁)

It's the middle of the school summer holidays and all that comes with that in Casa Middleton

I've been working on a bunch of paintings for specific reasons so decided to do some play just for me

Sneaky peeks...

I've a few pieces on the go at the mo, mostly big yins...

I've had a gift of a whole week clear and sometimes you need that to get a new body of work out of your head/heart/guts in the way you need it to..

A wee pal popped round to watch me paint one day and introduced me to some of what the faith filled youngsters are listening to these days (I was clueless...)

Another day a furry friend popped in to snuffle my face while I lay on the floor with my eyes closed - listening to The Revelation Room - working out a composition..

Another I spent priming canvases on our front lawn while listening to an interview by the ever inspiring Charlie Mackesy

Who knows when these will be ready to show you all!?

One is ready to be sized up for a frame but the rest... No clue...

For now here are some sparkly colourful little windows that may still exist when they're ready to see the world 😉

New studio

Just when we thought we'd got the flow of our home right we realised we'd missed something important to us (it doesn't matter what really).

My studio had always been a sacred place so my husband hadn't even considered it as part of the equation to fix the flow... But one day I did... And in the middle of a storm (a literal storm) we decided to move my studio (which included moving a sofa out the front door, round the side and in the back in the brief gap in torrential rain 🤣)

The studio is still a sacred space. And now sits at the heart of our home.

This week I had some leave and our kids away so it was time to sort the space. Thanks to the wonderful (read incredibly patient and kind) lady at the Wallpaper Shop Fraserburgh had exactly the colour I needed so between yesterday and today, got the walls painted the perfect colour for this space and all the bits where they needed to be.

The bugs and colour charts didn't loose their place and needless to say neither did mini Middleton 😉

Over the past couple of days I've primed many canvases ready to crack on and build out all the test 'sketches' and I've been working on.

The main man Dan Middleton Music has been working on new work too so the creative vibe in the house is inspiring!

Anyways... Thought some of you might like a sneaky peek at my space on the rare occasion it isn't a bit of a mess 🤣

Work in progress.

Okay okay so I know I've been quiet on here for some time but does anyone relate to the need to quiet the noise of social media when you're working stuff out...?

I was super inspired last year on a trip to Texas where I painted alongside some of my all time favourite artists and people.

So inspired I built out a plan for a new body of work that I knew would take at least a year between other commitments.

Since then I've been experimenting and plotting and such and then in April I started a new job...

For the past 16 years I've been in project/operational management type posts with a specialist interest in improvement methodologies.

I've worked across most of the subsets of the industry I work in and been involved in some national work but generally stuck to my region or sometimes stretching to the islands and areas surrounding ours.

An opportunity came up to work nationally in a senior change management capacity on a portfolio of work I strongly believe in affecting everyone in Scotland and I jumped at it!

One day I'll talk about how the balance between my 'normal' job and art has strong and important links for me but not today..

As most of you will know changing jobs is a tricky thing so the balance had to swing towards that for a bit while I found my feet and worked out how all the travel across the country would work with a young child and crazy dog...

But now, a few months in, I'm finding my feet and gearing up to some exciting things in both art and 'the other thing' over the next year.

I love how life takes you to places you never thought you'd go and it NEVER fails to amaze me!

So back to the task at hand.... Who has any clue what I might be scheming (art wise) with this doo-hicky..?

Werner's nomenclature of colours.

I love my studio, it's a beautiful space of peace and problem solving and I'm careful about what goes in there.

Just like in our home - I'd rather have nothing on the walls than something without a soul or that doesn't contribute to the cultivation of the environment we live in.

So in this wee corner of the studio I've had up some bugs I was gifted years ago from but they always seemed lonely...

Last year we had a wee date for a couple of days in London and popped into the . One of my all time favourite places in the world to visit.

(Side note and not the only reason by far - I had a dear great uncle I loved and who was a geologist living mostly in Malaysia at the end. When in London he'd hang out behind the scenes here. I always imagine his stories of mapping the geology of wild jungles and such when I'm there and that makes me smile)

Anyways! The natural history sections have always been my favourite and the colours, although faded by time, are wild!

In the gift shop I discovered a wee poster of Werner's nomenclature of colours and fell in love with it but opted to wait till we got home to buy it cos we only had hand luggage allowance on the flight home....

I got home and the NHM website didn't have it! I could only find rubbish fake versions elsewhere...

Roll on to this April and we popped down to London again, this time with Mini Middleton for a longer visit. I was so nervous the stock would have rotated but nope! There it was! And this time we took the train so plenty of space to carry it back.

These colours have been inspiring a series of paintings ive been exploring this past 7ish months in the background and I'm so excited to now have the studio reflect that!

Teenagers

Sometimes I teach. I don't talk about that much on here but I do. Young people, old people, sometimes about the technical aspects of art, sometimes about creativity and finding your voice, sometimes about dreams.

This weekend I joined a bunch of friends from who were teaching a room of 100ish teens about creativity and how we all have it - be it through football or baking or business or the arts.

As part of that they broke out to rooms to dig deeper, using their imaginations to create stuff. One of the rooms was the visual arts where I was there to lead and guide.

I thought we might get 10 or so kids interested in drawing or painting... Nope.... 35...

35 highly motivated, passionate teenagers... Some had never held a brush or pencil, others had been hiding it away for years - ALL were amazing.

They asked deep and meaningful questions, genuinely keen to grow and stretch, they were loud and messy and quiet and contemplative all at once.

Some of the skill took my breath away.

They created for themselves and then they created to give away to random people on the streets something that might bless them on a cold sunny Saturday afternoon.

Their generosity, care and compassion was infectious and I'm so grateful to have had the honour to spend time with them on a small part of their journey to be who they'll become.

I mean I think it took the whole 4 hour journey home to stop my ears ringing but gosh my heart was (and is) full.

When so much crazy is in the world it was humbling to see the next generation cracking on regardless and being the beautiful human beings they are.

I've a bunch of big projects this year in the books but wanted to stretch some muscles before diving in

One shot, no messing about, completion not perfection.

Sometimes that's more important

And yes I can see the bits that could be tweaked but they're not moving... That's not the point... Not today anyway.

This wee warrior had a birthday recently and I generally do a portrait of her every year so thought the timing was fitting.

If I need a warm up to get back into proper studio mode then what better than spending time with my favourite face!

Singing and praying over her, wondering at who the amazing person she is and is growing into.

I never fail to feel privileged that she's ours, that we get to facilitate her becoming the person she'll become.

Parenting is wild folks. It's messy and confusing at times but worth it.. kinda like this painting 😂

Work in progress

A little behind the scenes. Not sped up just a tiny insight into what goes into a piece.

This one has been on the go for around a month and is about 4 layers deep so far.

Stars are slow and meticulous but if you layer them up over lots of thin layers it looks a bit like what you see with your eyes - some further away from others. Bizillions of miles between them in their unimaginable numbers

We are super blessed to live in a small village where even standing at our front door with the (special type of) street lights on you can see the stars so clearly.

I spend a lot of time this time of year switching off our house lights and standing in the garden watching the sky.

Its magical!

This piece is semi abstract and I'm not quite sure what the end of it will be yet but I'll be sure to share it when it's done.
