We've been asking people from Peterborough about their experiences of art and culture as young people. You might recognise Cheryl Fergison as Heather Trott from Eastenders. She went to Bretton Woods Community School and got in touch to chat about her memories.

"Growing up in Bretton in the 70’s and early 80’s turned out to be an amazing life changing experience.

It was a new town with new houses and new schools (I still have that amazing memory of the smell of brand new carpet and modern buildings) every thing felt so positive, so happy and so ....community !

Education & Community are words that would become the basis of everything I did & still do in life, and is something I feel very passionate about.

I guess I felt a sense of positivity, hope & freedom like I could be free to express how I felt . Much of this was to do with my schooling - Bretton Woods Community School was a pretty special environment to learn in and I would say that 95% of the teachers were out of this world and extremely wonderful educators that allowed our imaginations to thrive and grow.

I learnt that it is important to nurture those around you and encourage people's strengths, I learnt that everyone is worthy of a voice no matter what your race, culture, sexuality religion or ability - it is always about respect and understanding.

I have always learnt that no matter how many times someone tells you you can’t do something , you have to stand your ground and not only prove them wrong but do it with dignity & grace.

What I would like you all to think about is this: value yourself, shape yourself, respect yourself and don’t buckle under pressure to anything that makes you feel inadequate. Always check yourself and say “I can do this I want to be given the chance” and remember to try to inspire others."

We're fundraising to provide Arts Award in schools across Peterborough. Arts Award is a nationally recognised qualification that helps develop important skills in children and young people. Cath Brooks runs Arts Award at the Primary School where she teaches. We chatted to her about why Arts Award is such an important part of children's education.

"Arts Award helps children develop skills like independence, creativity and allows them to experience rich cultural and creative experiences. This helps them to be inspired by artists and organisations to create things for themselves.

They reflect on their Arts Award experiences with each other, allowing them to share their ideas and inspirations. The Arts Award qualifications allow children to gain a recognised award even before they have left primary school. Our children really take pride in their Arts Award and feel it gives them a real sense of creative purpose in their school lives.”

"Arts Award gives you plenty of transferable skills, especially leadership and I would encourage anyone to do it."

We chatted to a marketing professional, a theatre maker, a teacher, an artist, a student and two youth theatre attendees about why arts is so important as we grow up. See what they had to say in our brand new film!

How important is creativity as we grow up? Why do we need arts in our lives? What skills do we learn from art, drama and music that we can use in jobs later in life? We asked all these questions, and many more, to seven wonderful Peterborough residents. Watch what they had to say in our brand new Faces of PHACE campaign film.

Featuring: Cath Brooks, Simon Munashe Dendere, George Lacey, Tegan McGibbon, Songyi Perry, Jodie Swepson and Sandy Wardrop.

We've been out and about this week talking to people all over Peterborough about why access to creativity is so important.

Kiarna Glendenning is a member of UROCK Youth Theatre Company in the city.

"From a young age I have never been sure of what a really wanted to do. I tried out lots of different routes and tried lots of different activities but nothing seemed to fit until I tried my first acting class. As cliché as it sounds, it’s all true. From there I continued with my theatre training and I never looked back.

I love it so much as I am able to explore different walks of life in a space that I am comfortable in as well as being able to physically express my emotions. I believe theatre is not only enjoyable it is also educational for people of all ages and is accessible for anyone.

Being a part of UROCK has truly been a saving grace within my life. It was the first theatre company I was ever a part of and I completed my first big performances and solo roles whilst being a part of the company.

I have gained so many relationships and connections that I will save and use for the rest of my life. The training helped me build my confidence and individuality and have helped shape me into the person and performer that I am today."

Emillia Zirker is our PHACE representative for Peterborough at the Regional Youth Voice Council Group. We chatted about how important arts have been to her as she starts to think about University.

"Since I was little, I've always loved the Arts however it wasn’t until recently that I have realised how truly significant they are to me.

The Arts and Theatre have given me such confidence and ambition to thrive in all aspects of my life. Not only have I learnt these life skills but I have also made friends. The Arts brings people together and that's why they are important.

Thanks to theatre I have found myself in a place where I am happy and free to express myself. Arts and Theatre give me inspiration everyday which I will take with me as I move on to university to study Drama."

We're looking to team up with local businesses to find ways that we can work together to make sure that all young people in Peterborough have the chance to experience arts. Email our Campaign Manager today on [email protected] to get involved.
