We've been asking people from Peterborough about their experiences of art and culture as young people. You might recognise Cheryl Fergison as Heather Trott from Eastenders. She went to Bretton Woods Community School and got in touch to chat about her memories.
"Growing up in Bretton in the 70’s and early 80’s turned out to be an amazing life changing experience.
It was a new town with new houses and new schools (I still have that amazing memory of the smell of brand new carpet and modern buildings) every thing felt so positive, so happy and so ....community !
Education & Community are words that would become the basis of everything I did & still do in life, and is something I feel very passionate about.
I guess I felt a sense of positivity, hope & freedom like I could be free to express how I felt . Much of this was to do with my schooling - Bretton Woods Community School was a pretty special environment to learn in and I would say that 95% of the teachers were out of this world and extremely wonderful educators that allowed our imaginations to thrive and grow.
I learnt that it is important to nurture those around you and encourage people's strengths, I learnt that everyone is worthy of a voice no matter what your race, culture, sexuality religion or ability - it is always about respect and understanding.
I have always learnt that no matter how many times someone tells you you can’t do something , you have to stand your ground and not only prove them wrong but do it with dignity & grace.
What I would like you all to think about is this: value yourself, shape yourself, respect yourself and don’t buckle under pressure to anything that makes you feel inadequate. Always check yourself and say “I can do this I want to be given the chance” and remember to try to inspire others."
