Short Close-Control Lead 🪢

Sometimes shorter really is better.
This little close-control lead is approximately 21 inches long, making it ideal for situations where you want your dog close and under control.

The main body is worked in a box knot, giving it a firm, substantial feel, but with a slight amount of give, while the handle is finished with a crown sinnet, more comfortable in the hand.

And here's a little bit of paracord maths: each lead uses one 20-foot length of each of two colours. That's 40 feet of cord becoming just 21 inches of finished lead!

A lot of cord, a lot of knots, and quite a satisfying little result.

After a fabulous day at Great Salkeld village hall, I'm home, unpacked, kettle on, and ready to start preparing for my next event on Sunday 27th September at the Evergreen Hall for The Penrith Spiritual Centre.

Hey ho hey ho it's off to the fayre we go.

Tomorrow is the day Loops & Leads goes to Great Salked craft fayre.

I'm all packed up and ready to introduce my 'Inspired by Gus' paracord range.
Alongside will be my Crochet by Jennifer Ann range of bags.

Not forgetting crocheted Rebel, who will be ready to greet you as you come in.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as can make it.

Behind the scenes.

Here's a little bit of finishing work on one of the leads. 😊

The Turk’s Head knot has just been completed, and now it’s time to cut and carefully singe the cord ends, hiding them neatly away to leave a tidy, secure finish.

It’s the part of making a paracord lead that you don’t really see once it’s completed — but it’s all part of making sure that
'That’ll do' really isn’t good enough. 😉🐾

Every end finished, every knot checked, every dog lead made with care.

My worktable has become a rather different place lately… and I don’t think my crochet hook is entirely enjoying its new life in paracord work. 😢😂

The crochet frog story

Crocheters know exactly what frogging means. Non-crocheters usually don't.
Crocheters have a strange expression, we say we're "frogging" our work.
It simply means pulling it apart and starting again.
Why "frog"?
Because as you pull the yarn out it goes "rip-it... rip-it..."!

When is a lobster clip not a lobster clip? 🦞

When you're making a Loops & Leads lead, it isn't enough to find a clip that looks the part and attach it to the end.

The humble lobster clip might look like a small part of a lead, but choosing the right one is rather more complicated than it first appears.

I look at size, weight and breaking strain before deciding which hardware is right for the job, then double check my findings.

Two clips can look very similar, but that doesn't mean they're designed to withstand the same load. The clip needs to be suitable for the lead, the dog it's intended for and the way the lead will be used.

Yesterday I chose the clips for our current leads, after a fair bit of looking, comparing and thinking. They're not necessarily the smallest or cheapest option, but they're the right ones for the job.

And, just in case a particularly enthusiastic St Bernard comes along, there's a rather impressive monster clip waiting in the wings! 😂

It's all part of the care that goes into Loops & Leads. The finished lead might simply look like cord and a clip, but there's rather more thought behind it than meets the eye.

Because when it comes to something attached to your dog,

“That'll do” isn't good enough.
