Remembering my remarkable mum today, still trying to follow her lead by tap, tap, tapping my words on a keyboard. I’d often go to bed hearing her type writer clacking away downstairs, following her dream of a degree through further education while teaching adults German. Still trying to do her love & inspirational lessons justice…so grateful to have had her for as long as I did. Hoping one day I’ll be able to share her story. May your light keep shining Astamarie xx

Philippe Gaulier appreciation post RIP

Found my photos from the clown summer school of 1997 where I discovered I wasn’t naive, cute or beautiful…I was a sadist, a butcher.
Embracing your ridiculous self opens the door to so much wonder & laughter & failure. Sometimes it’s brutal & other times powerful. Im grateful for it all, to have passed a few moments on Philippe’s stage & seen the miraculous transformation that can take place was a real privilege. To share that with students/artists from all over the world was the greatest buzz. Embracing our national stereotypes to subvert, ridicule & play…how liberating to be in a space where that was possible. To laugh at ourselves in others.
The best exercise was saved for last: impersonating each other’s clown! What a gift his teaching was & what a wonderful international community to be part of. That’s what you carry with you inside…& on stage…whether it flops or flies.
‘Why have margarine when you can have butter!’
Will be thinking of Philippe, his family, friends & his world wide community of fools & players on Wednesday. Sorry not to be at the memorial but I’ll smash a plate with you all!

We’ll be touring Winter Trunk Tales again this Christmas season as part of Starlight’s tour to hospitals in Yorkshire & N West region. As part of this year’s offer we’re working up a new tale to fit into our trunk: The Little Fir Tree 🌲 with a whole new friendly twist. Really thrilled to have some time with the amazing to develop this piece. Didn’t manage to get a snap of our rehearsal but here’s our stage set for the beginning of the story….

Thank you to for inviting me to share a couple of stories as part of your Spin A Yarn, Common Threads Festival! It was truly a heart hug to be part of such a special event, sharing & celebrating our common humanity with such humour, suspense & awe.

Not all Bluebirds are blue:
Our Bluebird will be flying to the Bigg Theatre in Biggleswade on 13th September. Do come & see if you can catch it with Mirtel & her tree spirit guide, Micky.
In the meantime I’ve been following an elusive songbird to Denia in Spain. It seems many are chasing the bluebird’s charms here too. Including an upbeat rockster that would definitely like a part in our show. See if he makes an appearance in the Land of Memory…

Reunited in Valencia:
Marvelling at how different life would’ve been if I’d taken the step to move Tell Tale Hearts to Valencia. Meeting up with Isabel Caballero has been magic…we often don’t see the impact our work has on the day to day but seen in terms of years…what an enormous difference she’s made to the cultural recognition of Cabanyal - a once neglected neighbourhood now with a focus for all its bursting creativity. So proud of this amazing woman, feel so privileged to have learnt so much from her & to have shared in so many theatrical adventures in our younger days.

Storytelling cute moments alert:
Although Trunk Tales has an age guidance of 4+ I Never underestimate the power of connection for younger children too. While their engagement is moment to moment, enacting, listening with their whole body & playing as part of the story, rather than following the whole narrative arc - This develops their love of stories & sharing in the telling of them as a collective experience. Stories are for all - young & old! Thanks Ellen from for these delightful pictures that capture such beautiful moments of engagement.

Thanks for a wonderful afternoon sharing suitcase stories with plenty of help from your fabulous kids. Glad to see there were many more actors on stage, performing when I left…inspired to tell their own versions of the stories. 😊👌🙌
Super impressed with your amazing Valley, such an inspiration. Thank you for having me 🙏
