Dan has been working hard on building our incredible Fish Out Of Water sculpture, and it's going for a test run next week in Hillsborough Park!

Catch the fish out and about on Wednesday 2pm - 4pm in and around Hillsborough Park. Dan will be giving it a test drive (pedal) and will also be looking to recruit a crew of fisherpeople to help it on its litter-picking mission....

Also, OUR FISH NEEDS A NAME!! Drop your suggestions in the comments below and we'll put our favourites to a vote 🐟

Video description: Dan is riding the fish sculpture and making the mouth open and shut. He's inside the frame which is made from various recycled bits and bobs, and he pedals it along on a purple chassis with bike wheels attached.

Slide 2 image: Dan is sitting on the bike frame part of the fish when it was at an earlier stage of the build. It's a sunny day and he's grinning and wearing shorts and t-shirt, under a lovely green bough which is casting dapply shade.

Working with & team to develop Gaia performance & walkabout as part of her PhD thesis on puppetry as activism. This involves a mini world puppet show on climate change within Gaia herself, a fabulous concept brought to fruition in collaboration with in Nov last year with final puppet make by Kerith Ogden and music/sound design by
Deborah Joy from has been playing alongside with Maia - our ‘every child’ character under direction of Bev Adams, bringing the impacts of climate change home in family friendly style. A show with hope & joy.

Both Gaia & Maia will be out and about in Leeds university for their first performance as part of the Be Curious Festival on Saturday 16th May. Always love the opportunity to play with puppets, this is my first time actually inside one!!!

Remembering my remarkable mum today, still trying to follow her lead by tap, tap, tapping my words on a keyboard. I’d often go to bed hearing her type writer clacking away downstairs, following her dream of a degree through further education while teaching adults German. Still trying to do her love & inspirational lessons justice…so grateful to have had her for as long as I did. Hoping one day I’ll be able to share her story. May your light keep shining Astamarie xx

Philippe Gaulier appreciation post RIP

Found my photos from the clown summer school of 1997 where I discovered I wasn’t naive, cute or beautiful…I was a sadist, a butcher.
Embracing your ridiculous self opens the door to so much wonder & laughter & failure. Sometimes it’s brutal & other times powerful. Im grateful for it all, to have passed a few moments on Philippe’s stage & seen the miraculous transformation that can take place was a real privilege. To share that with students/artists from all over the world was the greatest buzz. Embracing our national stereotypes to subvert, ridicule & play…how liberating to be in a space where that was possible. To laugh at ourselves in others.
The best exercise was saved for last: impersonating each other’s clown! What a gift his teaching was & what a wonderful international community to be part of. That’s what you carry with you inside…& on stage…whether it flops or flies.
‘Why have margarine when you can have butter!’
Will be thinking of Philippe, his family, friends & his world wide community of fools & players on Wednesday. Sorry not to be at the memorial but I’ll smash a plate with you all!
