Philippe Gaulier appreciation post RIP
Found my photos from the clown summer school of 1997 where I discovered I wasn’t naive, cute or beautiful…I was a sadist, a butcher.
Embracing your ridiculous self opens the door to so much wonder & laughter & failure. Sometimes it’s brutal & other times powerful. Im grateful for it all, to have passed a few moments on Philippe’s stage & seen the miraculous transformation that can take place was a real privilege. To share that with students/artists from all over the world was the greatest buzz. Embracing our national stereotypes to subvert, ridicule & play…how liberating to be in a space where that was possible. To laugh at ourselves in others.
The best exercise was saved for last: impersonating each other’s clown! What a gift his teaching was & what a wonderful international community to be part of. That’s what you carry with you inside…& on stage…whether it flops or flies.
‘Why have margarine when you can have butter!’
Will be thinking of Philippe, his family, friends & his world wide community of fools & players on Wednesday. Sorry not to be at the memorial but I’ll smash a plate with you all!
