Did you know that Magdalen College once had an organ that was moved not once, but twice? The Robert Dallam organ, built in the 1630s, was originally housed in the Chapel, but during the English Civil War, it was removed and taken to Hampton Court Palace under the orders of Oliver Cromwell. After the monarchy was restored, the organ was returned to Magdalen in 1661, reinstalled by Dallam himself.

This instrument had a remarkable life, and its casework still survives today. The Great case can now be found at Tewkesbury Abbey, while the Chair case resides at St Nicholas Church, Stanford-on-Avon, pictured here.

We were delighted to welcome Miriam Reveley, Organ Scholar at Jesus College, Cambridge, for last week’s Saturday Lunchtime Recital. Here she is performing the final movement of Mendelssohn’s brooding Sixth Organ Sonata - a set of variations on the Lutheran chorale Vater unser im Himmelreich, a paraphrase of the Lord’s Prayer. The sonata concludes with this serene Andante in D major.

Join us this Saturday to hear Joseph Hyam, Organ Scholar at New College, Oxford - we look forward to seeing you there!
