A great film needs a great soundtrack – and music doesn’t get much more powerful than the classics. Whether it’s Colin Firth delivering The King’s Speech, spiralling spaceships in 2001: A Space Odyssey or Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson pouring out their hearts in Brief Encounter, the stars wouldn’t shine without the melodies of Beethoven, Rachmaninov, Strauss, and…well, the list goes on!
In tonight’s live Nottingham edition of BBC Radio 3’s Friday Night is Music Night, the BBC Concert Orchestra, conductor Karen Ní Bhroin and Nottingham’s own pianist Clare Hammond come together to celebrate the best in classical music that defines the cinema masterpieces. Expect favourites from Amadeus, Chocolat, Up!, Out of Africa and many more, performed live and larger-than-life. You know them, you love them… and if you thought they sounded good in the cinema, just wait until you hear them in the fabulous Royal Concert Hall.
