Trading outdoors on The Forum’s Millennium Plain during an August Bank Holiday weekend is an absolute vibe. Here is why our outdoor spaces are such a massive hit:

Market Psychology: Are you giving your customers too much choice, or too little? 🛍️

It sounds counterintuitive, but one of the biggest mistakes we see traders make at markets is putting every single item they own out on the table at once. Or, on the flip side, trying to go so minimalist that the table looks completely empty!

Neither extreme is appealing to customers. It is a fragile balancing act.

In sales psychology, overloading your table is known to cause Choice Paralysis (or the Paradox of Choice). When a shopper is faced with a wall of 50 different candle scents or 30 variations of the same print, their brain has to work too hard to choose. Rather than making the 'wrong' choice, they make no choice, and walk away.

Conversely, an empty-looking table makes people think you're sold out of the good stuff or don't have enough variety to be worth stopping for.

Here is how to use psychology to boost your sales at your next market:

1️⃣ The "Rule of Three": Group similar items in threes. For example, have a budget option, a standard option, and a premium gift set. Humans are naturally wired to process trios, and it makes decision-making effortless.

2️⃣ Create a "Best Seller" Focal Point: Put your most popular item front and centre with a little sign saying "Our Best Seller!" People love validation, if everyone else loves it, new customers will feel safe buying it too.

3️⃣ Rotate Your Stock: Keep your table looking curated. If you sell out of a style, then restock it from your crates underneath. Just mind the big gaps, you don't want it to look abandoned!

Traders: Is your stall "Scroll-Stoppable"? 📸

When you’re trading at high-footfall venues, you only have about 3 seconds to catch a shopper’s eye as they walk past.

As event organisers, we see hundreds of setups and hundreds of traders at each event. We have gathered a few examples from past markets.

Here are 3 quick, budget-friendly tips to make your stall pop at your next market:

1️⃣ Go Vertical! Don't lay everything flat on the table. Use crates, steps, or small shelves to build height. It brings products closer to eye level and creates visual drama. Some vendors even safely raise their tables to get them closer to the shopper's eyes!

2️⃣ Clear Pricing is King: Shyer customers often won't ask how much something costs, they'll just walk away without so much as a word. Make sure your prices are bold, clear, and beautifully written.

3️⃣ Tell Your Story: Have a tiny, eye-catching (maybe even framed) sign that says who you are and how it’s made (e.g., "Hand-poured in Norfolk"). People love buying a story, not just a product!

✨ And one final bonus tip: Be present. Be friendly. No one wants to buy if they feel like they have to interrupt your doom-scrolling! 😉
