Booking your beginners printing session is easy.
Try out a couple of solo sessions, or make your own small group of 2 or 3 friends :-)

“For me, the printing process is part of the magic of photography. It's that magic that can be exciting, disappointing, rewarding and frustrating all in the same few moments in the darkroom.” — John Sexton

Photography does not necessarily end when the shutter closes.

For many photographers, the real image is only beginning at that point.

In the darkroom, every decision matters: contrast, exposure, dodging, burning, paper choice and timing. Small adjustments can completely change the emotional weight of a photograph.

Digital editing works differently, but the underlying idea is very similar.

The capture gives you the raw material. The finished photograph comes from interpretation.

That is why post-processing can feel so satisfying and so maddening. You can know exactly what you want an image to become and still struggle to get it there.

But that struggle is part of the craft.

A photograph is often not simply taken.

It is gradually shaped into its final form.

“Many people come up against significant barriers when learning photography in educational institutions. Darkrooms may have to cater for large numbers of students, the darkrooms may be poorly-cleaned and just feel mucky, and why on earth are they always painted black? There’s no good reason for that, it’s just “tradition”. No wonder students with neurodiverse challenges feel all-at-sea in these large, dark, caverns where you can’t properly navigate your exit safely without tripping or bumping into someone or something.”

“None of that happens here, the walls are painted white so the red safelights distribute red light evenly, and allow the dimensions and structure of the room to be visible and “felt”. Any signage is kept minimal and large type. We may have chill music playing in the lobby (Khruangbin and Mozart being current faves) while everything is focussed on clarity and simplicity; making the darkroom as easy to navigate and learn as possible. And bear in mind, I’ve been printing b&w for almost 50 years, so I’ll guide and support newbies through the process until they’re independent and can print with confidence”

It's an excellent taster for anyone interested in learning b&w printing skills and film processing, featuring short tutorials on:

* Making a 35mm film Contact Sheet

and throughout, gaining an understanding of the power of the black & white print through the value of exposure control, contrast, tone, and film grain.

Nilesh sets a lovely pace to this piece of personal film-making - never choppy or jerky with fast edits or flashy effects, it shows the magic of black & white print processing very simply, and the craft of image-making in the darkroom; linking directly to the very origins of photographic image-making that so many people rediscovered in their images of the recent eclipse. We're delighted that Nilesh had such a great experience in our lovely new learning space. He’s provided us with a superb learning resource and given us a glimpse of what film photography means to him. I promise I will never eat more than half of his sandwich ever again :-)

There’s easy street-level access a stones throw from City Hall and the Market, and St Giles car park right next door. The darkroom has been designed from the outset to be a welcoming and inclusive space where people can enjoy access to expert tuition, 9 enlargers in circulation, free developing & printing chemistry with every session, and even free photographic paper for your first booked session. It’s tailor-made for small numbers - 2 friends printing together, a printing “pod” of 3, or maybe 4 maximum as a small group with one extra adult in a supervisory role.

Morning or afternoon sessions of 3 hrs can be booked online here, with a special deal for anyone wishing to print in a 2some or a 3some:

Since the last public access darkroom closed down in the early 2010’s, Norwich hasn’t had a community darkroom for many years. We use environmentally-friendly processing chemicals only, and we’ll sell our own bulk-loaded film too.
