This lovely old photo shows Captain John Poole and gang working a mine shaft at Marshalls Brake. Word has it, these guys did all the drilling for clay back in the 1930s when this photo was taken.💪

Teignbridge Clay Cellars 🛶

Back in the 1930s clay was stored in heavy stone cellars at Teignbridge. From there, wooden barges carried the clay along the Stover Canal. The cellars (pictured top left) are still standing today, but now they are occupied by mechanics, vehical traders and Kadie’s K9’s Dog Grooming Services.

A postcard from Decoy! c.1920

This lovely old postcard shows the beginnings of what was to became the main opencast quarry at Decoy (today It is a beautiful lake). The houses of Vale Road are visible on the left and if you squint your eyes you will see a horse in the front of the image and a horse and cart (topped up with freshly dug clay) making it’s way out of the quarry (just beneath the houses).

Clay from Decoy was taken via horse and cart to Newton Abbot Town Quay, where it was unloaded and transported down the river in barges.
