We have now introduced meetings that are organised by our members. We have had a wide variety of topics ranging from some quite unusual party games to talks by members about their globe-trotting jobs and another by the husband of a member on his enthusiasm for parts of the American Railway system.
For our second meeting in October, we were captivated by the life story of one of our members and Compton village heroes, Ray Frewing. (In fact, he only had time to give us the briefest outline of his rich and touching past)
Born in 1922 he is now in his 102nd year and going strong. He came to Compton relatively recently since when he has been industrious, generous and busy. He has donated the funds for a lunch-box trolley for the Compton Pre-School; raised by making and selling bird boxes and bat boxes. (He of course made and gave the beautiful bench in the Compton churchyard.)
1922 saw Ray's, birth in London. His father was a master builder. After a mixed experience of schooling Ray trained in building arts and skills before using those skills in an office job. He was, of course, called up and spent the rest of the war years in the RAF.
Ray told us how he first saw and fell in love with his dear wife. A touching and beautiful moment
He gave us many vivid and fascinating anecdotes. There wasn't an empty seat at that meeting and there wasn't a sound to be heard until he had finished. Then of course he was thunderously applauded. (There were also a few tears in the room ).
Ray was thanked for his illuminating talk but also thanked for the huge contribution he has made to the Compton village community.
His contribution had already been more widely and rightly recognized recently when he was granted the Great Neighbour Award that BBC Berkshire's ' Make a Difference ' programme set up. He received that accolade in September from the hands of 'the lovely Debbie McGee '. And indeed she was lovely, leaving her lipstick on Ray's cheek !!
To quote from an article written about him for Compilations recently "You are our Legend and Great Neighbour. Thank you! " And so say all of us. "
