Join us at OUR LAST OPEN STUDIOS ✨

07/04/2023

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share with you a quick video of what’s been going on in the glass studio over the last few days on the lead up to our last Open Studio Event here at The Old Bath House on the 8th and 9th April.

So here we go. I have been getting a display ready of all my glass work and then also I have had a big clean and tidy because in my space I will be hosting 7 artists who will be exhibiting and selling their work. So I am in the process of, in my back room clearing away. I still have jobs out on my bench which has to be cleared because in this space I have David Hall and Sarah Piper.

Then moving into the front space, this is much tidier as on Thursday I have a pottery group using the space then 5 artists on our weekend will be exhibiting and selling their work.

It’s sad, I feel really sad, it being the last event together. We have built a community and relationship with artists, local people and tourists.

I was thinking that over the course of a year I have over 600 people coming to do glass workshops. We have worked with Newcastle Uni, Newcastle Women’s Aid ,
Barnardo’s, young people, people living with dementia and inter generational workshops, so there has been loads going on. I hope I don’t get too emotional over the weekend. I hope you will join us on our last event to make this the biggest and the best. Let’s go out with a bang!

Old Bath House Resident Artist here, taking over the account for this evening.

This weekend, Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th April, is the next Old Bath House Open Studios. I will be opening up my studio to the public, if you are in the area it is a great opportunity to pop along and see where many of the areas artists work. I will have a range of my latest work on display.

It’s a great opportunity to support the work of the region’s artists and craftspeople. All of the resident artists at the Bath House will be open alongside an array of guest artists and makers.

Unfortunately, given and ’s departure from the building this is the last event where we will all be together, giving the event a special tone. So make sure to get along on the weekend!

‘When I started up my business in 1989 my Dad agreed that I could try it for year “and then get a proper job” He thought it was frivolous and I should do something more helpful in the world. Ten or so years later he came to a fair with me, and saw people who thought that they were ordinary light up and become extraordinary when they put on a new hat. Delight spread over their faces and out towards their friends as they played about with colours and shapes. “Ok,“ he said, “I see, when they look in the mirror they find someone they didn’t expect to see, you bring them joy, keep it up. “
So I did and I do…’ 🙌🏻

'Having always had a love of art and nature I love drawing local wildlife. Living in rural Northumberland, I often spend my time out and about in nature with my camera in hand. I love being able to draw from my own photos and always try and add a little character to the animals I draw. I choose to work in pen and ink, allowing me to capture the detail of my subject in a classic black and white image.' 🦅

We would like to welcome Katherine Renton for the first time to The Old Bath House 🙌🏻

Katherine grew up on the North East coast. where the many ruins have inspired her work on the interconnection between work and play. Castles became the site for her childhood battle games. World war 11 pillar boxes were wendy houses, and concrete tank traps served as playground apparatus. Conversely, Katherines current series depicting sandcastles that she encounters along the coastline are created out of play but preempt destruction. Her fascination lies in the creative, renewable use of found natural materials. 🐚

Come along on Saturday 8th of April 10am-4pm to meet Katherine 👋🏻

About Us

The Old Bath House - A unique and exciting collective of artist studios and galleries on a former industrial site, set on the magnificent Northumberland coast.

The Old Bath House, which lies less than a mile from the beautiful sweep of Druridge bay, is all that remains of Broomhill Colliery which closed in the 1960s. After a long shift underground, thousands of miners filthy with grime and coal dust would return to the Bath House for a well earned shower, and it remains now as the last monument to this mining heritage.

Whilst retaining much of its original character, the building has now been developed to house a series of gallery, workshop and studio spaces in which a number of local artists and craftspeople have turned this former industrial site into a must-see destination for art lovers in the region.

With a full programme of events, exhibitions and workshops available, along with ample parking and coffee and cake, The Old Bath House offers a unique opportunity for visitors to buy or get involved with art in Northumberland.

'View from the Causeway, Lindisfarne', Acrylic on canvas, 20x50cm/8x20 inches.

Another painting from last year, done in October. Painted with on a trip with Paul Henery to a rather windy Lindisfarne Causeway. One of the paintings I will have available at The Old Bath House Studios open studios this weekend.
Two studies of a sunset from back in November last year that I have just gotten round to framing for the The Old Bath House Studios open studios this weekend. I enjoyed painting these as an exercise in fast working and attentive observation. Brightly coloured sunsets are something I would typically shy away from but in this instance I tried to remain an objective observer.

I have perhaps inherited a reputation as a mad and intrepid outdoor painter from this time. But since doing these works I have moved to working almost exclusively in the studio. Becoming much more interested in the recollected landscape.
I still walk and bike around and through these landscapes however, especially accounting for recent larger work, I felt unable to get the right finish in working outdoors.

It is something I may return to in the warmer months ahead, having gone a little soft during the bleak Northumbrian winter.

'Sunset Study 1 (November)', Acrylic on canvas board, 20x25cm/8x10 inches.

'Sunset Study 2 (November)', Acrylic on canvas board, 20x20cm/8x8 inches.
