When a research team stationed in Antarctica encounters a mysterious alien organism capable of perfectly imitating other living beings, their isolated base quickly becomes a nightmare.

As the creature begins infiltrating the team, paranoia takes hold and trust becomes a thing of the past. With no way of knowing who is human and who has been taken over, the remaining crew must fight to survive in an environment where the greatest threat could be standing right beside them.

Directed by the legendary John Carpenter, The Thing is a masterclass in suspense, psychological horror and creature effects. Featuring groundbreaking practical effects by Rob Bottin, the film delivers some of the most grotesque and unforgettable transformations ever put to screen.

With its bleak atmosphere, incredible tension and a haunting score by Ennio Morricone, The Thing explores isolation, mistrust and the terrifying fragility of human relationships when survival is at stake.

For Day 15 of Fear Screen’s 31 Days of Horror, we’re bringing you a very special recommendation. The Witch (2015) is one of our director’s personal favourites, and for good reason. (Jay’s)

Set in 1630s New England, this atmospheric folk horror follows a deeply religious family who are banished from their Puritan plantation and forced to settle on the edge of a vast, foreboding forest.

When their youngest child mysteriously disappears and increasingly disturbing events begin to unfold, suspicion and paranoia take hold of the family. As tensions rise and their faith is pushed to its limits, the eldest daughter, Thomasin, finds herself at the centre of accusations that threaten to tear the family apart.

But as the darkness surrounding their isolated homestead grows, the family begins to realise that something truly sinister may be lurking in the woods.

Written and directed by Robert Eggers, The Witch is a masterclass in atmospheric horror. Its haunting cinematography, meticulously crafted period setting, unsettling sound design and deeply disturbing performances create an overwhelming sense of dread.

Rather than relying on cheap jump scares, the film slowly gets under your skin, exploring religious fanaticism, isolation, superstition and the fear of the unknown.

With an unforgettable performance from Anya Taylor-Joy and a chilling portrayal of ancient folklore, The Witch is a film that stays with you long after the credits roll.

For Day 14 of Fear Screen’s 31 Days of Horror, we’re travelling back to 1977 to revisit Suspiria, a landmark of Italian horror and one of the most visually distinctive films in the genre.

When American ballet student Suzy Bannion arrives at a prestigious dance academy in Germany, she quickly discovers that something isn’t quite right. Strange occurrences, unexplained disappearances and a series of brutal murders begin to unravel the seemingly elegant world of the academy.

As Suzy investigates the sinister events surrounding her, she uncovers a terrifying secret hidden within the school’s walls, revealing that the academy is home to something far more sinister than anyone could have imagined.

Directed by the legendary Dario Argento, Suspiria is a feast of vivid colours, surreal imagery, haunting architecture and an unforgettable soundtrack by Goblin. Its dreamlike atmosphere and nightmarish sequences helped establish it as one of the defining examples of Italian giallo-inspired supernatural horror.

With its striking cinematography, extravagant practical effects and relentless sense of unease, Suspiria is an experience that has to be seen to be believed.

A true cult classic that continues to influence filmmakers and horror fans nearly five decades later.

For Day 13 of Fear Screen’s 31 Days of Horror, we’re heading to Spain for The Orphanage (2007), a haunting supernatural horror that combines gothic atmosphere, psychological tension and an emotionally devastating story.

Laura returns to the orphanage where she grew up, hoping to transform the abandoned building into a home for children with disabilities. Alongside her husband and young son, Simón, she begins a new chapter in the place that holds so many childhood memories.

However, when Simón begins communicating with mysterious unseen friends, Laura initially dismisses his behaviour as childhood imagination. But when he suddenly disappears, she is plunged into a desperate search that leads her to uncover the disturbing secrets hidden within the orphanage.

As strange events begin to unfold, Laura becomes increasingly convinced that the spirits of the building hold the key to finding her son.

With its beautifully unsettling cinematography, haunting sound design and deeply emotional storytelling, The Orphanage is a masterclass in atmospheric horror. It’s a film that blends supernatural terror with grief, motherhood and the devastating lengths a parent will go to for their child.

🥊 INTRODUCTION TO SCREEN COMBAT: THE ACTION FIGURES

We’re teaming up with The Action Figures Fight Team for a hands-on introduction to the art of screen combat, led by fight director Mark Hunter.

Mark is a highly skilled fight performer, fight director and co-founder of The Action Figures Fight Team, with credits on major productions including House of the Dragon, MobLand and The Witcher.

With a BA in Screen Combat from East 15 Acting School and over eight years of teaching experience through Hunter’s Stage Combat, you’re in very capable hands.

🧟 SO, WHAT WILL YOU BE LEARNING?

Imagine you’re surrounded by a horde of zombies. You’ve got a foam baseball bat, nowhere to run and an audience waiting to see what happens next.

How do you make that fight look convincing?

This workshop will introduce you to the fundamentals of screen combat, focusing on unarmed fighting techniques, choreographed fight sequences and using foam baseball bats to create convincing action on screen.

But here’s the important bit…

SCREEN COMBAT ISN’T ABOUT HITTING SOMEONE. IT’S ABOUT SELLING THE FIGHT.

Safety comes first, always. This isn’t a contact martial arts class. You’ll learn how to create the illusion of impact, work with a partner and perform fight sequences safely in a fun, supportive environment.

Whether you’re an aspiring actor, filmmaker, performer or horror fan curious about what goes on behind the scenes, this is your chance to step into the action.
