HAARLEM ARTSPACE — OPEN STUDIOS

This September, Haarlem Artspace opens its studio doors as part of the Wirksworth Festival Arts Trail, offering visitors the opportunity to step beyond the gallery walls and into the working spaces of the artists who make up its creative community.

Across the studios, discover a wide range of approaches, materials and ideas — from painting, drawing and photography to printmaking, jewellery, assemblage and sound. See artists at work, explore the processes behind their practices and experience Haarlem Artspace as a living, working environment.

This year’s Open Studios brings together Sophie Cartmell, Amanda Graham, Amanda Nichol, Diana Green, Fiona Allen, Gunther Walker, Kasra Jalilapour, Martin Lowe, Pat McCabe, Peter Knight, Rebecca Gallagher, Rose Kindred-Boothby, Ruth Cox, Tricia Rice and Gavin Muschamp.

Working across varied disciplines and perspectives, each artist brings their own distinctive voice to the Haarlem Artspace community. Visitors will encounter work at different stages of development — from new ideas, experiments and works in progress to more finished pieces — offering an insight into the breadth and variety of creative activity taking place within the studios.

Open Studios is also a chance to connect: with artists, with different creative practices, and with the work being made within Haarlem Artspace. Take your time, ask questions, discover new work and meet the people behind it.

By opening up these normally private working spaces, the event offers an informal and direct way to engage with contemporary creative practice and to experience the energy of a community of artists working side by side.

Get ready to go BIG! In this exciting, hands-on workshop, children will explore self-expression through larger-than-life art. Each child will create their very own full-body self-portrait—starting by tracing around their body and then bringing it to life with bold colours, patterns, and imaginative details.

This is all about celebrating individuality, building confidence, and having fun with creativity. There’s no right or wrong—just lots of paint, plenty of space, and endless ways to express who you are!

Perfect for young artists who love to get messy, think big, and make something truly unique. 🌈✨

Children are also welcome to bring found objects, buttons, beads or other small materials to personalise and embellish their artworks.

Led by experienced art educator Katy, SEEDLINGS encourages curiosity, confidence, self-expression and creative exploration. There is no pressure to produce a perfect finished artwork—our focus is on enjoying the process, experimenting with materials and discovering new ideas together.

Whether they invent an imaginary creature, a curious character, or a favourite animal, children will have the chance to bring their ideas to life through playful making and storytelling.

YEP. WE'RE DOING IT AGAIN.

Applications are now open for PERENNIAL 26, Haarlem Artspace's annual community exhibition.

PERENNIAL is open to artists of all ages, disciplines and career stages with a connection to Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire, Wirksworth or Haarlem Artspace itself.

The exhibition is all about bringing people together. It's a chance to share work, meet other artists, make new connections and celebrate the creative community that exists in and around Wirksworth.

This year we'll be exhibiting around 100 works and two artists from the exhibition will be selected for a future duo exhibition at Haarlem Artspace.

There will also be:
🍻 An opening party
🍻 A literal wrap party
🏆 A very stupid award ceremony

Most importantly, it's completely free to enter.

For full submission guidelines, eligibility, key dates, delivery and collection information, and details on how to apply, please visit our website.

SEEDLINGS - the Haarlem Artspace family art club

Join us for the very first SEEDLINGS, a new family arts club at Haarlem Artspace for children aged 4–10 and their families.

Inspired by nature, imagination, and Haarlem’s exhibition programme, Seedlings is a fun, process-led workshop where children are encouraged to experiment, explore, and create freely in a welcoming gallery environment. Together we’ll imagine magical forests, strange landscapes, and growing worlds through storytelling, sensory play, mark-making, and hands-on material exploration.

Guided by experienced art educator Katy, the sessions focus on curiosity, confidence, self-expression, and the joy of making — with no pressure to create a perfect finished artwork. Seedlings is all about creativity, discovery, and playful experimentation.

Thursday May 28 Morning Session: 10:00–11:30Afternoon Session: 13:00–14:30
£10 per child (plus booking fee)

Parents and carers are asked to stay and support their child throughout but we encourage children to explore independently where possible and embrace a little creative mess along the way.

Please wear comfortable, scruffy clothing suitable for art-making. Aprons and bibs will also be provided.

Spaces for each session are limited to 20 children, so advance booking is essential.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to Turner's Art Supplies for their generous support and sponsorship of Seedlings, helping us provide creative opportunities for children and families at Haarlem Artspace.
