Do you or your pupils love to write? Or would you like a purpose to write? If so, we would love for you/them to take part in our new writing opportunities.

We have some fantastic writing competitions. They can either be completed as part of your lessons within school, or as tasks for you to complete at home, or just for fun!! It’s up to you how many you take part in - you can choose which one(s) you think are most suitable based on your age, skills, experience etc.

We can’t wait to see what you and your pupils produce and are excited about reading the finished pieces.

My Year – Right Off or Write On
A writing competition for 8-18 year olds!
We invite young people in Mansfield and surrounding areas to enter this writing competition for our time. There will be two categories: 8-12 year olds and 13-18 year olds.

You can enter in a writing form of your choice: a poem, a short story, a song lyric or a monologue. There will be prizes on offer for each age group, and for each writing genre including:
*The winning entries brought to life by an actor or lyrics set to music
*Winning entries displayed in Mansfield Museum and Palace Theatre
*Opportunities to attend workshops and free tickets for a performance at the Palace Theatre
*A free workshop for your school or college
*Vouchers for local shops and attractions

The Writing Task:
This year has been one of the most difficult we have faced as a community, nation and world. The coronavirus has managed to disrupt so much of our lives as we know it. Some people will have seen 2020 as a write off. Yet, many positives have come from this time as we adapted, took up the challenge of the defeating the virus and found new ways of living and working together.

What is your take on this year? You may use your experiences and how you feel about the future, or how you have admired the NHS workers, friends, and events in the local area as an inspiration for your writing, be it based on fact or fiction.

This is an opportunity for all young people to express through their writing how they feel at this time, and how they are looking forward with hope. The competition will be judged by local professional practitioners and the winners announced by Friday 12 March 2021.

Deadline for entries is: Friday 12 February 2021

Write Up Our Street!
A writing competition for all ages!
This competition forms part of ‘Mansfield Revived’, a National Lottery Heritage Fund project, focusing on the preservation and renovation of shop fronts in Mansfield’s Leeming Street (from the Brunts corner at the edge of Toothill Lane down to the Market Place, and some of the buildings in the Market Place area and Stockwell Gate). There is a map showing all the buildings on the project website www.mansfieldtownscape.org.uk.

Children and adults are invited to submit their piece of writing about visiting Leeming Street and the Market Place area. Children are welcome to get stories from older relatives and write about those. Perhaps you know someone who lives or lived there, a grandmother who worked in a shop. Maybe you loved going every Saturday morning to Boots or Dickie Dirts (the same building), or your favourite shop to buy toys or sweets, or go for a coffee, or even buy your wedding dress or a new suit. Some people may have memories of nightclubbing or visiting bars. Please remember that the Townscape Heritage project area only goes up to Toothill Lane / Clumber Street, so I am afraid stories about the Palais de Dance or Palace Theatre do not count, sad to say.
You can choose to write in one of the following formats:
*Short story
*A poem
*Song lyric
*A Monologue

The competition will be judged by local professional practitioners and the winners announced by Friday 12 March 2021. There will categories including Primary School pupils, Secondary and College students, and over 18s.

There will be prizes on offer for each age group, and for each writing genre including:
*The winning entries will be brought to life by an actor or lyrics set to music
*Winning entries displayed in Mansfield Museum and Palace Theatre
*Opportunities to attend workshops and free tickets for a performance at the Palace Theatre
*A free workshop for your school or college
*Vouchers for local shops and attractions

Deadline for entries is: Friday 12 February 2021

To enter any of the competitions above, please send your piece of writing along with your name, age, and contact details to: Christopher Neil, Education Manager, Mansfield Palace Theatre, Leeming Street, Mansfield, NG18 1NG or email: [email protected]
