Monet gave us a hidden view when he painted the church from across a hidden gorge (Gorge des Moutiers). This angle makes the church appear tiny and isolated on the cliff top, emphasizing the vastness of the sea and sky. The version most famous in the UK is the sunset view. The warm light from behind the church causes its solid stone form to dissolve into soft shadows, while the foreground foliage catches the final golden glow

Ray Fawcett - Wetherby (1967); large oil on canvas. Fawcett was accomplished in the era of British Modernism and contemporary art. As such he developed an abstract style which shared context with contemporaries like Asger Jorn, Corneille and Ben Nicholson. No part of his composition is more important than any other, in comparison to his earlier style, which often tallied with the instinctive movement of the eye, vertically from the bottom

When Marc Chagall painted Hommage à la fiancée (To My Fiancée, 1911) in Paris, he was intensely homesick for his fiancée, Bella Rosenfeld, who was still living back in Vitebsk (modern-day Belarus). His close friend, the avant-garde poet Blaise Cendrars, saw the painting in Chagall's studio and named it Hommage à la fiancée. Chagall loved the title because it perfectly captured the romantic longing he felt while working in exile. Find the art that matters at Canon & Rare
