New studio build underway!
A couple of my hand finished Angels are Astronauts print editions currently on show at
Friedrichs Pontone Gallery
273 Church Street
New York NY 10013 USA
Congrats to my new gallery FriedrichsPontone opening last night in New York. Can not wait to represent Manchester UK in New York USA next year there with a solo show !!
Get used to seeing pictures of wolfie 🐕 😁
New studio space! Can't wait to get into this new space in the coming months. All 1600sq ft ! The opportunity of windows and more space to work on multiple shows was to good to turn down.
Brand new still life piece, this was originally intended to be part of my last solo show but I was never quite happy with it,I've repainted the background 3 or 4 times.
Some pieces fall into place right away but I equally love the paintings that I have to fight with.
The details on the vase are a close up section from my 2019 painting 'last of my kind'.
Lots underway at the moment, currently finishing a few pieces for with in Dec.
My studio will be looking like below again shortly with finished works ! Photo from before my first solo show in 2020.
Limited editions.
Current available editions below.
A couple of the hand finished down to there last few.

Scaffold platform required for installation of this recent commission piece at a clients home!
Studio shot from 2017, not long after I moved into my current studio.
I was more nocturnal then, preferred painting in the evening. Time of the day affects how one paints !! Just as music, mood etc does.
Intersect Apsen with Friedrichs Pontone Gallery New York.

3 of my pieces at the show including this small painting 'A landscape with Melting Stars'
I love my big garden pots like my big paintings.
Excited to be exhibiting in Aspen for the first time with at , July 31st - Aug 4th.
Here's one of my pieces which will be at the show. 'Fragile Things' 120cm x 120cm. Oil on panel.

A tunnel in the forest #1 and #2. Monoprints on bread and butter paper. A3.
After these were printed, the ink board (on which is artwork is created by me) is then wiped down, making these the only two that can ever exist.
These are my first ever mono prints, a fun process I'm looking forward to exploring further.
You can see the second one is slightly lighter in areas, due to less ink remaining on the board as its rum through the press.
Random scribbles and things from this week.
Oil painting & mono printing. Love my "job"
Something completely different this week, had Bea, A Level art student with me on on work experience for the week. Two of the days I arranged for us to go along to the Oaks Primary school to do some painting with the year 4s and year 6s as a change of pace to being in the studio. The children at the oaks all done a fantastic job, below are a few photos of a session we done learning how to paint a Van Gogh sunflowers vase !
Makes me think of the Pablo Picasso quote, 'Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up'!
Images shared with the schools permission.
A tunnel in the woods #1. Original A3 monoprint. The first ever monoprint I've created. Really enjoyed the process of manually creating a print, inking up, running through the press etc.
Thanks very much Pete Marsh Art for passing on his knowledge about the process aswell as the use of his materials.
Monoprint, drypoint, maybe etching I'd certainly something I'll be doing more of in the future.
Forever playing around with colour. Close up from a work in progress.
excited to have gallery representation in New York with Friedrich-pontone Gallery , Tribeca.
Looking forward to showing my work there in the future.
Letters from the children of Saturn. work in progress.
I don't know what this is yet or what it'll lead too.
.it was originally meant to be a piece from my dec solo show but I randomly picked it out of my store room today and attacked it with a new energy.
When people ask about my personal favourite paintings I've done, this is definitely up there! From a technical point of view I was really pleased with this one. It just fell of the brush and completely in more or less two sessions.
When I create all my still life paintings, I like to find the sweet spot between realism and abstract.
Vase 4 2020. From my first show at
'The upper world' 2018.
Up high at its home in Abu Dhabi.
One of the most satisfying parts of what I do is seeing where my works which I create in my studio here in Manchester end up living. Very greatful.
A little congrats to all my friends from Wales on World Cup qualification! Esp man of the match Wayne Hennessey, here with his painting of mine, aptly titled 'Mountains we climb'
This month the five planets of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will align in planetary order, all visible with the naked eye just before sunrise (northern hemisphere).
Here's my paintings of each of these planets from my recent Angels are Astronauts series
All 180cm x 170cm oil on linen.

A painting from 2018, at its home in Düsseldolf. 🇩🇪
A painting called 'The world is our oyster' 2018.
I've always been fascinated by big industrial skylines. The two girls represent my twin daughters Indiana and Summer who are now aged 6.
In my band touring times a few years before this painting, I took a load of photographs of industrial scenery in Pennsylvania and also driving through Minnesota which I used as reference material when painting this piece.
In situ. A piece called 'As Clouds Fall' 2020. At its home in 🇦🇺.
Love seeing where my work ends up..
'Fossil'
A quick sketch to begin today's session from my oil pad sketch book.
I set myself a goal to complete a small painting within around 1 hour each each morning, before I begin on the days other larger works.
Its a great way for me to get ideas from my head onto the canvas, it's completely carefree and it's a great way to explore possible future subjects. It's also good practice, which never stops.
A lot of the time I only show completed paintings on social media, but maybe I'll share a few bits like this from time to time , to give some insight into how paintings come together.
Fossil, Inspired by the pre 1960s beliefs of what Planet Mars was (Forests, Rivers etc)
Hitting drums in the past life 😄🥁
52 bowls, an exhibition by Jo Ladd & Nigel Leighton. Opening this evening at Falcon Mill Artist Studios , Bolton, Greater Manchester.
See poster attached for full info.
One of my twin daughters Indiana adding the magic to one of my paintings when working from home 😄 (..in my garage)
Vase 5 and 6 paintings from my 2020 show.
My brother has the best seat in the house.
Incredible photos he captures from his cockpit on an iPhone.

Hi Everyone, My good friends at Royal Crown Derby are running an amazing new campaign to raise funds for the NHS Charities Together Covid 10 Urgent Appeal. The ‘Make a mug, Make a difference’ campaign is asking children to get creative and design some artwork for a mug, the winning mugs will be produced on 26,299 mugs, representing and celebrating every day that the NHS has been making our lives better since its formation on 5 July 1948 to its 72nd anniversary in 2020. The two prize winners (two age groups) will take a tour of the Palace of Westminster and will be presented with the first mug off the production line together with their framed artwork. The winners will also visit the Victoria and Albert Museum where their mugs will be exhibited. 'Falling away from me' limited edition giclee prints. I take great care in replicating the original painting as much as possible with my print editions. From the scanning stages in which multiple hi res images are taken to proofing & colour matching process. Printed on archival museum grade papers , using hi pigment inks, I'm always blown away by the quality. Obviously it'll never be the same as an original but this is as close as it comes ! Basecoats. The first thing I do with a new canvas is give it a general base coat which i then paint over. Usually either earthy dark colours or a muddy pink. There's nothing worse than painting on plain white canvas plus it also gives you time to think about how the painting might develop ! I almost sound like I know what I'm talking about , but I honestly don't 😁 trail and error, what works for me might not work for someone else. No right or wrong way but never paint on a clean white canvas 😁. 👉👌
