Is This Not Enough? & To Calvary 🏛️
In the morning Jesus is Brought to be tried before the Governor of Judea, Pilate.
The people are persuaded and turned against the Christ.
This is felt through the powerful Aramaic sang by the choir:
Ha! Ha gabra! - Behold! Behold the man!
Emrah dallahha! - The Lamb of God!
Shkulaihi lehana! - Away with him!
L’Baraba! - Barabas!
Sheetah, Sheetah hu, kashan hu saiber - He was despised, He hath borne our sufferings
Makika kiban hu Saba - He was rejected, Our pains He carried.
Emrah d’shaqel ke-iyt-eh d’alma - The lamb who bearers the sin of the world!
And then, as Mary, His mother, shed her devastated tears, and John, His beloved friend, bowed his head, all who bore witness to the world’s most pivotal moment watched as the Saviour, the Son of God, bowed His head and willingly gave up His life.
Mitch’s portrayal of Pilate brought a remarkable depth of humility to this powerful Gentile figure. Through Rob Gardner’s stirring music, Mitch masterfully conveyed the inner conflict of a man torn between authority and awe. As Pilate, he stood before the crowd—a figure of power—yet his performance revealed a pleading wonder, a man bewildered by the bloodthirsty demands of the people. You could see it in his eyes, hear it in his voice—he had felt the power of the man before him and knew.
Mitch’s commanding yet vulnerable performance didn’t just depict Pilate’s struggle—it invited the audience into it. His Pilate made you wrestle with the same haunting question: Why? Why would they demand the death of One so clearly divine? With gripping sincerity, Mitch knocked it out of the park, leaving many in the audience undoubtedly reflecting on that very question.
This song delivered the powerful, agonising harmonies of Mary, His mother, John, the beloved, and the forsaken Pharisee accusers, intertwined with Pilate’s booming pleas, building to a roaring climax of tension. The moment when Christ was sentenced to death and taken to Calvary was nothing short of unforgettable—a harrowing and profoundly moving highlight of the performance.
