I can’t believe I’m working on a Monday! ….Mondays are supposed to be the start of my weekend...anyway, PA hire for a small wedding today, speakers placed both sides of the room and wireless microphone setup for the speeches, so an easy job in one of my favourite hotels, Didsbury house Hotel.

Always a pleasure be be working at the Stables Wedding Farm. I was supplying the audio for the ceremony and my immediate worry was the heavy rain! Obviously electrical equipment and people dressed to the nines do not like to mix with torrential water falling from the sky. However, The Stables Wedding farm literally had the problem covered with their weather protection. (Last time I was here, it was completely open due to the lovely weather and not a cloud in the sky) With the worry of heavy rain no longer an issue, I was faced with the harsh working conditions of being surrounded by the most tastiest cakes, great food, beautiful flowers, amazing people and great music! It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it!! Stables Wedding Farm Prendi il Biscotto

How time flies, when I was a teenager in the mid to late 1980’s, local pubs used to host 1960’s nights and although the 60’s was not my favourite decade at the time due to me being funky cool teenager, these themed events seemed to pack out venues every weekend. (I use the term ‘funky cool teenager’ in a slightly sarcastic way. Boy George, The Pet Shop Boys and the Cure would have called the fashion police about my dress sense). Fast forward to the present day and we now have the advantage of the many musical decades to explore, look back on or even discover if you are a spring chicken, and the 1980’s was evidently an amazing decade for music, it’s certainly the most popular, fun and nostalgic decade from my observations from being behind the decks. The reasons for this could be young music lovers are discovering their parents music collection, the advent of streaming services or the very fact that music from the 80’s was so varied in style, yet at the same time it had the emerging production technologies that seemed light years ahead of any other previous decades. Whatever the reason for the current popularity of the 1980’s music, it seems to fill the dance floor with all age groups.

I have been a master of music selection and filling the dance floor for various events throughout my many years as a DJ, from rock and roll to mixing the latest club hits, experience has taught me well. However, my favourite decade is still the 1980’s. Not only was the 80’s an important part of my youth, it offered an amazing musical journey that has become an iconic part of music history. If you are planning an eighties themed event, go and checkout some of my mixes on the mixcloud page.

A little look through my 80's tracks resulted in this quick mix! Not your usual 80's tracks that get played all the time, something a little different for a change, enjoy! Due to the amount of heavy equipment I have, I reckon this job should feature as one of the tasks on channel fours SAS program!!....notice my white van in the distance and where the marquee entrance is....obviously I would have got my rear wheel drive van stuck if I had even tried to drive through the mud. This is why I have a six pack and big muscles....well, in reality, I have a slightly convex one pack and aching muscles. The cow in the next field laughing at me, and the pigs are looking at me with disgust due to how muddy I am! On the plus side, I had a lovely evening with lovely people.

A couple of pictures of recent events. (Those who like their 90's indie/brit pop music may recognise Mark Morris on the guitar - he is the main man from the Blue Tones, and playing live, he sounds exactly like he does on his records. Nice guy as well) As we hit spring, the main wedding season kicks in!...this job is harder than you think!...

Choosing a first dance song can be a very personal decision for a couple, and often reflects their relationship, personalities, and shared experiences. Here are some popular first dance song suggestions for a wedding:

"At Last" by Etta James
"Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran
"Can't Help Falling in Love" by Elvis Presley
"You Are the Best Thing" by Ray LaMontagne
"Perfect" by Ed Sheeran
"A Thousand Years" by Christina Perri
"All of Me" by John Legend
"L-O-V-E" by Nat King Cole
"Unchained Melody" by The Righteous Brothers
"I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith
"The Way You Look Tonight" by Frank Sinatra
"Marry Me" by Train
"You Make My Dreams" by Hall and Oates
"Stand By Me" by Ben E. King
"Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton

When choosing a first dance song, it's important to listen to the lyrics and make sure they reflect each others feelings and relationship. The tempo of the song is also important to consider, as it will determine the type of dance that will be appropriate. If the couple is unsure, they can always ask their DJ or wedding planner for recommendations. Ultimately, the most important thing is that the first dance is a special and meaningful moment for your wedding day.

I sometimes work alongside sax players, here's a few tracks that I have mixed together, and it's fair to say these tracks are fairly typical on such sessions.

I often work alongside Saxophone and percussion players and as a result I get asked to mix songs together whilst they play. Here's a very similar mix set to the last event I worked on that included a live sax and drummer. There's some super cool tunes in this mix, I hope you enjoy! www.davesdisco.co...

First time I've worked at Hobbit Hill. What a wonderful place to host your wedding! Nice accoustics and the sound even travelled well to the outside where some of the guests were enjoying the sunshine. Gorgeous surrounding, camper van facilities and off course the hobbit houses to stay in. Well kept, professional and friendly staff, highly recommended.

Weekend done!....happy Monday!....Whilst many people have the Monday morning blues as they return to the work after the weekend, Monday is the start of my weekend! Midweek time off also has the advantages of less traffic, less people in the shops and my job means my unconventional weekend last around 4 days! Sounds like I'm boasting :)

26/12/2021

I get to play all kinds of music when I'm working at events and I'm as comfortable playing the classic old tunes as I am mixing dance tunes and doing my bit on the microphone when needed. I've got 4.5k followers on Mixcloud of people who like dance/club and RnB tunes and growing! Occasionally I upload an interrupted mix of tunes I've thrown together for people to enjoy, Mixcloud is FREE to listen to and a great resource if you are having a New Years Eve party at home this year

On a slightly separate note, Fingers crossed new lockdown restrictions are not imposed at the start of this week, otherwise there will be some very disappointed clients, especially those who have moved their event already from earlier in the year due to restrictions.

Merry Christmas everyone and I wish you all a very happy New Year

It all started on the dark side of the moon!

like most people who have the pleasure and privilege of being paid to entertain crowds of people by playing music, my aspirations, interest and love for music was firmly founded when I was very young. As child in the 1970’s, the world was a very different place. Typically of the 1970’s, smog, coal fires, the rag and bone man and boxed shaped cars was common place and the advent of the modern world, including the internet, compact discs, computers, mobile phones and man bags, had yet to be invented, however, radio was as prevalent then as it is today. During the school week, my mother would shout me up out of bed and I would tumble down the stairs with one eye half open to my awaiting tea, tower of hot toast and the radio playing at a moderate volume on the table. With the dreaded thought of school approaching the radio soon became my sanctuary and form of escapism. After school, I would often sneak my mother’s radio outside and listen to Radio One's teatime radio show with my friend. My love for music began to develop. (I could be very cheesy now and place a sound byte here by john miles, a song entitled ‘music was my first love’, but you might be either too young to remember that 1970’s song, or you might think I was being serious rather than having a playful joke with musical history, so I wont do it) In the late 1970’s my sister left home to marry a guy who, like almost every other typical man from the 70’s, seem to constantly wear denim jackets and jeans, long hair and had somehow established large carpet like growth on the side of his face known as sideburns. Not long after my sister had left to move onto married life, I noticed she had left behind a record player, headphones and one vinyl album. With my new found desire to explore music, I knew I had to set the player up and play that album, so late one night when my parents thought I was sleeping, I carefully and quietly unpacked the record player, plugged it into the mains and inserted the headphones, and then gently placed the stylus into the outside groove of the vinyl record. I knew my sister would freak if she knew I was touching her stuff, she freaked at me once for breaking her cactus plant, but that’s another story. I remember looking at the cover of the album as the slight cracking noise began to filter into the headphones, it had picture of prism on it with a black foreground. At this point, if your of a certain age, or indeed a pink Floyd fan, or taken note of the heading of this article, you may have already guessed that the ‘Dark side of the moon’ album was going to get introduced. What made the experience even more over whelming was that this was the first time I had experienced stereo, and it was through headphones too which brought the whole album alive in my tiny brain. My mother’s radio was of course mono, and although stereo is now taken for granted, for a young boy who had discovered a love for music, and only ever heard music in mono, stereo was an amazing audio experience. From that point, I wanted everyone else to feel what I felt when I listened to music and being a DJ was the answer. I spend my weekends making magical musical memories for everyone and getting paid to do this is a bonus! From 18th’s to 80th birthday celebrations, from Corporate events to beautiful weddings, I can cater for any event and any style or genre of music.
