WE HAVE COMPLAINTS. WE ALSO HAVE RECOMMENDATIONS. 🫡

We’ve spent a fair amount of time talking about the weird, expensive and sometimes completely broken machinery around Fringe. And we stand by it!

But the actual artists? Fu***ng hell. People are good at stuff.

In between guarding an orange chair, we’ve squeezed into as many dark rooms as our bodies, brains and bank accounts could manage. Here are some of the shows we’ve loved—and immediately started telling everybody else about.

MADE IT TAKES UP SPACE.

We’re excited to announce First Street as MADE IT 2026’s Headline Public Art Partner.

Together, Short Supply and First Street are creating a new public art programme that gives emerging artists the opportunity to show their work at scale, in public and in the heart of Manchester.

The partnership launches this October, when eight large-format boards across First Street will be handed over to artists—taking MADE IT beyond gallery walls and creating a bold new platform for their work.

We’ll be announcing the first artist opportunity very soon.

If you’ve experienced the Fringe from outside its usual networks: what felt strangest to you?

12 days into our first Fringe, we are somewhere between cultural analysis and a vitamin deficiency.

We came from Manchester with one orange chair and very little connection to the networks that power this place. That means we’re naive about some things. It also means lots of what the Fringe treats as perfectly normal looks completely bizarre.

The stars. The reviewers. The handful of TV shows functioning as an entire career ladder. London as the centre of gravity. Artists spending money they don’t have for the possibility—not promise—of being noticed.

We’re not above any of it. We came because we believe in what the Fringe can do, and we’re having an incredible time. But open access does not mean equal access, and loving a cultural institution doesn’t mean refusing to notice who it asks the most from.

We are thrilled. We are knackered. We miss our dogs.

CONVERSATION 05: DAN BOERMAN —COMEDY WITH DRUMS IN IT 🥁

We ask guests to sit in our chair and tell us about an idea they’ve always wanted to try 💥

Dan is great at folding fitted sheets in unusual locations. He’s good at drumming and decent at comedy. Unfortunately, combining them has so far made both worse. 👎

His first experiment involved bringing a full drum kit to a gig and playing a solo whenever a joke bombed. He then forgot the plan and left the kit untouched for the entire show.

Maybe your second passion doesn’t need a separate career. Maybe it needs to interfere with the first!

A novel inspired by Chelsea’s Korean family history — preserving their journey while transforming it into fiction that can be shared with the world.

Chelsea told us she has always wanted to write. But six years into a demanding career in finance, she barely has time to read — and the dream has grown into something so big that beginning feels like it would require quitting her job entirely.

Then the first step becomes smaller: not a finished novel. Just a few pages, shared with her family.
