DJ John Gannon has passed away in the early hours of this morning.
At this time words fail the sadness felt by our community and beyond. A legend within Manchester's club and music scene. But more than that he was always a wonderful person with time and kindness for all. Everyone one of us will have our own stories of John, and cherished memories. It was an honour to have known him.
All our hearts and sympathy got out to his beautiful Dawn, and his family at this darkest of moments.

10 years since we shut the doors, and we still miss you all

This week on Love 80s Radio we remember another Manchester nightclub – Jilly’s Rockworld. A Manchester institution, Jilly’s was originally known as Fagan’s. It opened in the 1970s, on Oxford Road, and was renamed Jilly’s in 1983, before adding Rockworld to its signage.

The club attracted punks, rockers, goths, metalheads, skaters, moshers and indie kids to its labyrinth of rooms for more than twenty years. The music which pumped from the tall speakers ranged from metal and thrash to punk and ska, but never strayed from the safety of the rock genre. Scores of sixth formers and university students flocked to Jilly’s each weekend, to spend their hard-earned cash dancing and messing about.

In the main room, the DJs would spend hours pumping out bangers from bands such as Limp Bizkit. Classic tunes from Iron Maiden and Metallica were regular big hitters in the smaller back room. Meanwhile punk hits were played wall to wall, with ska, within the hallowed walls of Room One. Years later, a fourth room opened up to cater for the indie kids.

Queues to enter the bright orange bathrooms would start early. Next to the cloakroom, there was a little gift shop. It sold an array of unusual wares, from tarot cards to vampire teeth.

Anyone who ever set foot in Jilly’s will never be able to forget the smells, sounds and sights. At its height, Jilly’s was a glorious place. Friendships were made and broken there. When the doors finally closed, in 2010, the owner blamed the smoking ban and competition from new music venues.

Did you ever go to Jilly’s? Why not share your memories with the Love 80s Radio audience?

Huge thanks to everyone came along to Jilly's Reunion last night. Absolutely BRILLIANT!! Loved it.
And big thanks to all at Ritz for making this happen. Well done to everyone.
What a surprise to see John Gannon, I didn't know that was happening. Great to see him, and so many other friends too. Just not enough time, could have easily done an allnighter.
Thanks everyone for such fabulous feedback. Luv ya!

The following statement can be found on the Manchester City Council website. It confirms that there are no current intentions to knock down the Salisbury. The 'plan' released yesterday is simply a proposal that has not been selected yet, suggested by a developer who hasn't been chosen yet, and shouldn't even be online.

Of course there is always the possibility of bad news, but we're a couple of years away from that yet, and even then it's still unlikely.

Basically we're safe for now!!

"Statement on Position of the Cornerhouse

Network Rail and Manchester City Council have begun a process to appoint a developer to assist in the potential delivery of a major, new regeneration scheme for the site, which includes the Cornerhouse buildings, and which could compliment the improvements to the railway being delivered through the Northern Hub.

The brief for the developer will be to design and bring forward a scheme which will:

• Improve the station for the benefit of all users, its environment and connectivity with the nearby city centre neighbourhoods, including First Street.
• Act as catalyst for the wider regeneration of this part of the city centre.
• Integrate the arches along the eastern end of Whitworth Street West with First Street.
• Provide appropriate amenity at the key junction with the Corridor and First Street

The timescale for this process is that the partners are hoping to select a preferred developer by early 2016, with development anticipated to take place over the following five years. Key criteria used for selecting the developer will include how they will take account of the heritage of the surrounding area, including the integration with heritage and character buildings and structures, as well as design quality, sustainability and regeneration benefits.

A report will be taken to the Council’s Executive once a preferred developer has been identified, but prior to their appointment. This will provide the opportunity for Members to feed into the process, and the information will be publicly available in the usual way.

At this stage, there are no specific proposals for the area, and therefore there have been no decisions taken on the Cornerhouse buildings. Following the appointment of the preferred developer, detailed plans will be developed. These will be subject to a full consultation process with local residents and stakeholders as part of the planning process.

The partners are exploring appropriate temporary uses for the Cornerhouse buildings in the interim period."
