Nomad Clan paint a huge mural in Maseille France
'Ruins to Riches'
La Belle De Mai,
Marseille 2018
Supported by Asso Juxtapoz, Hiphop Society, East Street Arts and Electron Libre during a 3 week residency at Le Couvant.
Film by. Studio Bokehgo
Special thanks to Brouettes et compagnie for their support.
The giant corner mural tells the story of Marseille, in particular the area of La Belle De Mai, painted on the old to***co factory that was once an economic pillar supporting the local community, it is now a thriving creative hub named La Belle Friche, complete with art studios, skate park, theatre etc.
The mural to the right depicts an old worker wearing a trademark 'Belle de Mai' blue over coat. She walks amongst the ruins of the old Greek empire that founded the city, the financial divide of Marseille weighs on her hunched shoulders.
To the left the future of Marseille with its rich cultural diversity, outstanding natural beauty, ancient history and a younger generation absorbed by knowledge and creativity.... breaking free from the corruption and un employment that has made Marseille the most poverty stricken city in France.
Le Couvant
Atelier Juxtapoz converted a nun's convent into 80 + artist studios and residency living quarters which would become our home for the three weeks we stayed in Marseille.
The previous residents lived a life of silent order within the convent walls, the only time they left the confines would be their last. As city buildings grew in hight and modern life began to creep its way in, the nuns moved from the area of Belle de Mai to seek the solitude of rural life.
Luckily this gem of a place with its acres of walled gardens has been given to the artists of Atelier for the next 3 years, who have consequently thrown open their doors to the local community so that they can enjoy the green space which is a rarity in this area. Atelier and its residents run workshops for young people, are cultivating an allotment with local asylum seekers and people struggling with mental health issues as well as bringing a whole host of international artists over to create site specific art instillations and murals. It truly is a beautiful band aid bringing people together and offering hope to a largely forgotten community.

French police take food and water from refugees
We held our workshops with the young people who visit Jungle books cafe, the cafe was the life blood for so many unaccompanied refugee kids in the camp. It makes me SICK that the French police have done this!! Mary & the volunteers have given everything to keep this place running. Please please donate to help them continue their mission to feed and nurture some of the most vulnerable children on the planet.

The last time we went big!! Cant wait for the next!
On the 7th November Nomad Clan artists Aylo & Cbloxx headed from Manchester to Liverpool to create their biggest mural to date. The challenge - to paint the 21m high outside wall of The Tempest building in 2 weeks.
The project was sponsored by Kobra Paint and commissioned by Capital Centric who pride themselves in offering creative and inspiring office spaces in tune with eco issues.
From the very first day Nomad Clan were faced with the challenge of England’s weather, creating the artwork grid in pouring rain with just enough time to lay down initial outlines before darkness fell.
The next day brought little change in weather but a glimpse of colour was brought to the mural which took inspiration from its environment while telling its our story.
Street Art Atlas arrived on the 3rd day of work in progress, Nomad Clan were already well on the way to creating a thought provoking mural. The face of a nomadic female character with an air of attitude looked down from the huge wall set amongst a vivid green background. A plumb bee and colourful beehives had taken shape hoovering along side.
An interesting aspect of The Tempest are the beehives on the building’s roof that contain 180,000 bees installed to help the UK’s falling bee count. Nomad linked this into their work by referencing bee hives, bees and the ‘bee hive’ hair style that would be painted. Dripping honey referenced the honey Tempest produce from the hives.
As the days passed the depth of detail in their work grew with layers of colour and different techniques. The colour palette was quite different from past works with bright yellow and piercing blues. Cbloxx explained that painting with Aylo brings a lighter, more playful side to her creativity, working together to create the Nomad Clan signature style.
The nomadic character, which is often depicted in their work in some form carrying a backpack symbolises a modern day take on mother nature and a reminder to never stop exploring - to engage in new experiences. The green background depicts nature in what can be a grey concrete environment, bringing colour and improving the architecture, a focus of Capital Centric.
Unlike most portrayed women in nature this character isn’t romanticised but has an edgy side to her with tattoos that link to Liverpool’s maritime heritage and the bees.
Planets and stars were added to the character’s backpack. This was a personal link to Nomad’s childhood passion of astrology, reminding us not to forget our passions, that the world can be a magical place and dreams should be followed. This is much like Nomad following their desire to paint no matter what hurdles they faced.
The weather was certainly a hurdle on this project, as we experienced most extremes, high winds, rain, hail stones and the brief glimpse of sun. The severe weather cut down painting time to some 3hrs on numerous days. However this did not deter the enthusiasm and Nomad’s dedication to the project was commendable. Through illness and rough sleeping conditions they still carried on.
By all means it was not doom and gloom, each day a new aspect would lift our spirts from the excitement of The Drone filming to the fun of Aylo’s proud invention of the ‘Mad Cam’ we used to film time lapses.
Towards the end of the first week the lower half of the mural saw a new addition, a Liver bird. A symbol of the city of Liverpool, represented in the form of a cormorant. The birds on the Liver Building are believed to be designed to watch over the city and the sea. Just as this mural, the Liver bird belongs to all people of Liverpool. The highlight techniques created on this particular part are striking, the teal colour adds an effective glow and silkiness to the birds feathers. Just as striking is the energy created in the water and how cleverly the ship tattoo is thought out to sit on the wave of water.
Around the Liver bird, Autumn leaves began to form in rich colours, symbolising an ever changing environment often true in street art and new beginnings to businesses within Liverpool.
In the second week further detail was added. Spray cans were replaced with rollers and paint as work started on the bee hive hair. Unfortunately the scissor lift would only go so high so the very top part could not be reached.
Adding Liverpool’s native flower emblem Sea holly gave pink splashes of colour with floating petals and light beams effects adding softness to the work.
The mural was a spontaneous creation from the original illustration with additional ideas being added as it progressed. One of these included a large fish jumping out of the water which could well be seen as a link to Liverpool’s prime angling.
Attention from passers by was positive with both children and older generation wanting to try their hand at painting a block of colour on the wall. The resident bees seemed to improve too by pausing for a moment on the wall.
The mural details a mix of graffiti, illustrative and realistic styles, making it appealing to all generations.
Nomad Clan have not only created the highest mural in Liverpool but exceeded Capital Centric’s statement “Lets make it awesome” ...
and AWESOME it is!
The mural can be found at Tempest,Tithebarn Street, Liverpool.
Nomad Clan are set for more Capital Centric projects in the near future, so this is sure to be the beginning of something big.

I decided to start drawing and painting more androgynous people because i want to. Also in 2016 I am going to start a blog where there will be more of my experiments, inspiration and chaos.

Running group toured CBLOXX MOT Marching Out Together mural while the walking group had a great chat time.
All in support of Friends of Dorothy Charity !
These stormy spring days are full of dark clouds, so it’s time to brighten things up with ‘The Peacock’ mural in Leeds city center celebrating Marching Out Together. Even in these photos furnished by the artist Cbloxx aka Jay Gilleard, you can see how much the new piece can perk up a passerby.
The artist and organizers of this new piece say that the mural means to celebrate and encourage the further inclusivity of LGBTQ+ folks in the fandom and fields of Leeds United Football Club. Since 2017 a campaign has recognized everyone’s right to stand proudly, cheering the team.
“Marching Out Together was founded in 2017 by Andrew Tilly and Drew Harrison, with the support of Leeds United Football Club, to create a safe space for LGBTQ+ supporters, their friends, family, and allies at LUFC’s matches,” says a press release. “The group’s wider mission is to bridge the gap between the LGBTQ+ community and the stereotypically masculine fanbase of football.”

Fan group Marching Out Together commissioned Jay Gilleard (CBLOXX) to paint it - they painted the huge Athena Rising mural at Leeds Train Station too! 🤩
The Peacock is so high the team had to bring in a second lift just to reach its highest point... but after a fortnight battling the elements it's now complete!
70,000 will see it as they pass through Leeds every day 💪 We Are So Proud!

Huge thanks once again to Jay aka CBLOXX of the awesome Nomad Clan for their energy, openness and generosity of spirit in talking to me about the personal and artistic journey.
The short video here shows Jay, who recently came out as non-binary, creating a stunning portrait of trans activist Mr Samo.
The pandemic has certainly been a reflective and challenging time for us all, but to see someone be able to grow in this way, face their demons and come out fighting really is something to behold.
And it does no harm that individually and collectively (with Aylosdoodles) as Nomad Clan, they’re producing their best work so far.
Link to the fill in-depth interview below. Pop the kettle on, settle in and enjoy!

It’s live now on clackmanstreetart.com — link below — and is certainly the most personal interview I’ve done to date.
Thanks so much for Jay for being so open about their journey during the pandemic and beyond, coming out as non-binary and using their art to help understand and express their experience.
With a special shout out to Mister Samo, who you can see in the beautiful painting behind Jay — and also to Co_Labs and my good friend Charles Daxon for some of the images used in the vid.
We do also of course talk about Nomad Clan’s latest walls in Coventry, Doncaster and St Helens (from about the 40 minute mark) — they really are going from strength to strength with their murals.
Anyway, hope you enjoy it — it’s a deep one for sure! ✌️❤️💯
