The Gallery has been incredibly lucky to exhibit the work of guest artist Jen Orpin for the second time in our show 'Northern Connections'.

Known for her paintings of roadsides and motorways, Jen's technical skill is really a sight to behold, with this piece measuring at only 12.5 x 18cm!

We only have two paintings by Jen left so be sure to come and see them before the show ends.

Another excellent painting by is this drizzly canal and lock scene. As always, he manages to capture light and bodies of water seemingly with such ease. The drops of rain streaking across the canvas and cloudy air hung with pockets of mist are all familiar sights in the North, even more so as the weather turns and rendered beautifully here. This piece would be sit well in the collection of an avid walker, fisherman, barge resident, canal enthusiast or anyone from the Potteries region.

We have more work by Rob in the Gallery at the moment, please see our website for more information.

These stunning night scenes by are some of our current favourites in the Gallery. The signature light reflecting on liquid in his daytime scenes is turned up to maximum in the dark. Reminiscent of Hopper’s ‘Nighthawks’, artificial light sources add a luminous and shimmering vibrancy to the transclucent surfaces in his paintings.

Headlights shine into traffic lights shine into office strip lighting and street lamps mirror the warm glow of shops and apartments. There is a magic in his work that also rings true to the time of year. An early sun down means an extended period of darkness, Michael’s vignettes spotlight these times and, perhaps, encourage us to appreciate the beauty of night time.

We love how the downstairs Gallery space has looked for the ‘Pierre Adolphe Valette - Works on Paper’ exhibition. The room really lends itself to an intimate exhibition and we have enjoyed the response from clients and visitors alike regarding the curation of the show.

There is still plenty of time to see our ‘Northern Connections’ & ‘Pierre Adolphe Valette - Works on Paper’ exhibitions as they both continue on until Sunday 20th November.

An important part of planning our 'Northern Connections' exhibition was picking a variety of artists who depict the subject through different mediums and in different ways. We wanted to see everyones individual interpretation of the North! From traditional oil paintings to pastels to egg tempera - this exhibition celebrates a breadth of techniques and skills.

We are incredibly proud to have sold these two watercolour paintings by Valette at our preview weekend!

These pieces really are prime examples of Valette's delicate mark making and fine tuned use of colour.

Once again, thank you to everyone who attended the preview and joined us in celebrating the exhibition opening.

What a day! The opening of our dual exhibitions ‘Northern Connections’ & ‘Pierre Adolphe Valette - Works on Paper’ could not have gone better. Thank you to everyone who made it down to Contemporary Six yesterday and managed to snap up some beautiful artworks. The atmosphere was incredible and it was such a pleasure to see so many happy faces.

Our collection of Valette drawings proved extremely popular. So much so that there are only a few remaining, including the four in this post. Do not miss a rare opportunity to own an original piece by one of the fathers of Mancunian art.

Our preview weekend continues today until 5pm. Why not join us?

‘Northern Connections’ & ‘Pierre Adolphe Valette - Works on Paper’ continue on until Saturday 20th November.

Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th October 2022 - 10:30am-5pm at Contemporary Six Gallery, 37 Princess Street, Manchester, M2 4FN

‘Northern Connections’ - The exhibition is a fantastic opportunity to see new work depicting life in the North of the UK, showcasing work by Gallery and guest artists depicting various Northern locations. Artists include Lowry and some of the most significant and respected painters in the UK today such as Jen Orpin, Michael Ashcroft, Liam Spencer, Helen Clapcott, Rob Pointon and many more. This is a fantastic opportunity to see a broad range of perspectives in a contemporary space with a number of the exhibiting artists attending on both days to discuss their work and processes.

'Pierre Adolphe Valette - Works on Paper’ - Featuring over 50 original Valette drawings, never before seen in a commercial gallery. The collection of drawings were created by Valette during the 1910s and 20s at the height of rationing, they are presented on various kinds of paper stock including wallpaper, graph paper and tracing paper. Part of this collection was included in a Valette exhibition at The Lowry during 2011/12. Beautifully rendered, these small, delicate drawings provide a great opportunity for collectors of Valette and of Northern art to own work by one of the Father's of Mancunian art.

The Exhibitions take place over two floors (for accessibility questions or concerns, please send an email to the address below. Please note there is staircase access only to the downstairs exhibition space, however, we do have a ramp to access the ground floor of the Gallery.

We have been busy hanging our Valette exhibition today!

In this particular watercolour we see a clear connection between Lowry and Valette. Two oversized cows float above four comically small figures. These figures which one would normally associate with the ‘matchstick men’ of Lowry show the obvious ‘Valette-esque’ influence in his work. Perhaps we should be praising Valette for the invention of ‘Matchstick Men’ instead!

‘Chickens 1’ showcases Valette’s skill in capturing the essence of the avian rather than the bovine this time. This drawing really shines a light on his process, detailing the animal from all angles in a bid to understand form and placement, a similar technique to life drawing by classically trained masters. The application of watercolours is so delicate and really adds life to each of the birds.
