Interview

GH Green Haus

 LL Julie Campbell.

GH; What’s your favourite colour?

LL; Well, orange / copper / rust is the symbolic colour of my latest album...its harks back to the orange- sodium street light that was outside my bedroom window when I was growing up..It has seeped into my sub consciousness

The cover of my latest album Former Things is lit in an orange glow, I associate it with childhood..the colours of rust, copper, my ginger hair..they're associated with time, memory, the suburban / urban landscape..

GH; When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

When I was 3 years old I knew I wanted to be an artist. I was always compelled to create, especially drawing and painting; this was eventually overtaken by making music.

Did your mum or dad play music or do art?

There was no obvious creativity, but my Dad was creative in different ways and was always good at building things, and when he was young I think
he was a band for a while called The Dentons – (he was from Denton).
My older brother Neil is a writer, and has had collections of stories published by Salt.

GH; You studied fine art at Manchester Metropolitan University what was that like?

LL;

It was a wonderful time of learning. An art degree encapsulates so many subjects - archeology, psychology, politics, geography, philosophy. The art history lectures and especially an art trip to New York were so inspiring.
My degree was in Fine Art painting but I also explored printing, etching, and my final degree shadow was actually sculpture; I made figurines out of solid bronze.

GH; Are there any artists you particularly admire?

LL; I still love Egon Schiele (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egon_Schiele) for his incredible draughtmanship - I love his brittle line and angular figures, and felt there were parallels between that and my guitar playing. I used to draw Egon Shiele figures on my early flyers for gigs.

GH; Is there a connection between your art and music.

LL; I see making music in similar terms to painting or making art. I find the process of writing a song is very painterly...building up layers, adding, subtracting, shaping towards the finished pieces…It comes from the same source.

I feel lucky I suppose that I’ve always had the need to create, I‘ve never questioned it. I only wish I could finish more music more quickly..I have lots of unfinished sketches on hard drives…

GH; Why did you embark on the creative life?

LL; It was just something that was always there inside me. As a kid and young adult I read voraciously, far more than I do now..all the usual classics. When I got a bit older I particularly liked poetry, and still do, especially T.S. Eliot, Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath.

GH; So why turn to music ?

LL; A key moment was when I bought 4-track Tascam cassette recorder. This is when I started recording layers of sounds and parts, mixing and building the songs. It kicked off the whole process of playing all the instruments myself, recording and mixing and building up these sound worlds.

As a teenager I’d bought myself battered old acoustic guitar for £10 from Ashton market and taught myself to play from a book.

GH; You appear to be inspired by post punk music, is that right?

LL; When I stumbled across bands like Wire, Gang Of Four, Joy Division, Josef K, I instinctively felt I’d found my tribe. I was very influenced by the jagged, angular guitar playing of Andy Gill. I contributed to the GOF album The Problem of Leisure with a cover version of Not Great Men.

GH; Your first album was called Nerve Up. Described by Paul Morley as Unique and brilliant. Why the name?

LL; It refers to getting the Nerve Up ..to do something - this could suggest something positive or negative..its not really resolved.

It was great to have the support of someone like Paul, who’s writing I love, and we’ve stayed in touch.

GH; The Quietus described your second album Hinterland as “a vibrant and urgent combination of genealogy and vision.’ What was the thinking behind the album ?

LL; Lyrically all the songs relate to the various landscapes of my life. When I stumbled across the word Hinterland, which means ‘the land behind’ it really helped me finish the album, and it encapsulates so many meanings - the landscape of our past, our childhood, Manchester landscapes, the inner landscapes of the mind…we all have our own hinterlands.

GH; You played all the instruments on the album apart from the drums, is that right?

LL; Yes, guitar, bass, synths, drumpads, various percussion..also cello and clavinet, which is the funky Stevie Wonder-esque part you can hear on the song ‘Hinterland’. I wrote and recorded all of Hinterland in my home studio, then travelled to Keyclub Studio, Michigan to work with Bill Skibbe to mix the record and give the album extra power and polish. I decided to start cello lessons when I was 18, and was able to use Manchester Music Service for very cheap lessons..I’m not sure if this resource is available now. I no longer have lessons but still play the cello as a sound source.

GH; How was lockdown for you?

LL; It felt peaceful, as if the whole world had calmed down. It helped me finish write my third album Former Things. I looked forward to the daily walk, which felt meditative, and I kind of enjoyed this simpler way of life.

But life has to go on and I was very keen to start touring, but its been such an unpredictable time … I was surprised and pleased with how busy the tour was in January.

GH; Besides your eagerly anticipated DJ gig on the 23 April at the Green Haus, Lions Den, 253 Deansgate Mews, Deansgate, Manchester. M3 4EN. Tickets Skiddle https://www.skiddle.com/whats-on/Manchester/The-Lions-Den-Deansgate-Manchester/LoneLady-in-the-Green-Haus/36049681/ (just click)
what else is lined up?

LL; I’ve got a tour supporting Primal Scream, then live dates at Blue Dot, Beat herder and lots of other stuff lined up.

GH; What’s the tune you’ll open you Green Haus set with?

LL; Something murky and moody I’m sure

GH; Tune to rescue the dancefloor, just in case?

LL; people always seem to love Trevor Jackson’s Machine
Worshipers

GH; Track on repeat in the LL house?

LL; I’ve been listening to On Hold by Photay a lot.

See you on the 23 April. Spend some quality time in the company of one of the UK’s most creative and compelling artists.
