Over the past two decades, I’ve had the privilege of navigating a path that’s been filled with incredible travels, opportunities, experiences and above all, invaluable lessons. From beginning my journey on the frontline to holding senior leadership positions across organisations such as Royal Mail and Amazon, each step with it’s high moments and it’s challenges, has contributed to shaping my under

standing of continuous improvement and true leadership. For me, leadership isn’t about titles or accolades—it’s about the people we serve and the connections we forge along the way. My journey has been enriched by experiences that have deepened my appreciation for operational excellence and the significance of investing in people, and fostering a culture of growth and learning within teams. Personally, one of my proudest moments on this journey was being recognised with an ‘Excellenteer‘ accolade by the British Quality Foundation (BQF) in 2024. It was a humbling honour, reminding me of the responsibility we have to continually strive for excellence, and invest time in developing our future leaders. Hosting the Ever-So-Lean Podcast has been an incredible highlight. This platform has allowed me to connect with individuals from around the world, sharing insights and experiences that I hope ignite inspiration and drive positive change. Speaking engagements also hold a special place in my heart, as they allow me to infuse energy and passion into every interaction, sparking enthusiasm and fostering a sense of empowerment. Partnering with individuals and organisations to support growth and the pursuit of excellence is truly inspiring. Through initiatives like the Ever-So-Lean Learning Series and Ever-So-Lean Rising Stars (dedicated to continuous improvement training for young minds), I aim to share the wisdom gleaned from my experiences, empowering others to achieve their potential. As I reflect on my journey so far, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunities I’ve been given and the lessons I’ve learned. But this journey is far from over, and I’m eager to continue learning, growing and making a positive impact wherever I can. I want to support you on your journey, get in touch, as I’d be honoured to stand beside you along the way!

What if the person you're calling an underperformer isn't the problem?

What if they're actually doing the best they can within a process that is broken?

In this video, I share a simple analogy that challenges one of the biggest mistakes leaders make when trying to improve performance.

Before we blame the person, perhaps we should take a closer look at the system.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Today I’ve had the privilege of spending the day on the judging panel for the Established Leader category at the BQF UK Excellence Awards.

For me, this category represents one of the very highest accolades within the awards. Established leadership is not about titles, presentations, or polished words. It’s about sustained impact. It’s about how leaders shape environments, develop people, navigate challenge, build trust, and consistently deliver results over time.

Every single nominee today was outstanding. The standard was exactly where I would expect it to be for an award of this calibre. There was real depth, authenticity, humility, and credibility throughout the presentations and discussions.

What stood out most was the genuine focus on people, culture, and creating environments where high performance can thrive sustainably. It was incredibly inspiring to hear the stories, challenges, lessons, and achievements shared throughout the day. Judging at this level is never easy because the quality is so high, but that is also what makes it such a privilege to be involved.

A huge well done to everyone nominated. The level of leadership on display today should make every organisation represented incredibly proud.

Tomorrow we learn the finalists who will join us at Wembley Stadium in October. Tickets available to join us at www.bqf.org.uk

Thank you to my fellow judges for being a great team. And to Laura Pearce for facilitating a professional and enjoyable day!

Yesterday, I spent the day on the judging panel for the UK Excellence Awards in the Excellence in People Engagement & Development category. Listening to organisations share their journeys, successes, challenges, and cultures got me thinking about a common thread I see time and time again in truly excellent organisations.

And honestly, it’s far simpler than many people would expect....... 👇

And if you want to see some of the UK’s most inspiring organisations recognised, you can get tickets to the finals at Wembley Stadium on 8th October via the BQF website www.bqf.org.uk

That look you give when someone says:

“We tried Lean once… it didn’t work.”

Usually followed by:

no leadership buy in

no clear purpose

no engagement with people

no standardisation

no follow through

and a random 5S event from 2017 nobody speaks about anymore.

Lean didn’t fail.

The approach to it did.

Trust me.

The biggest gap I still see is this.

Leaders want improvement, but the people doing the work are not truly involved in shaping it. Leaders are trying to do it themselves.

The people closest to the work are the ones who understand it best. When you ignore that, you create friction, rework, and frustration.

When you make use of it, you unlock flow.

High performance cultures don’t rely on a few people making decisions. They rely on many people improving the system, every day, one small thing at a time.

Most organisations can point to their values.

But how many can show you what those values actually look like at 9:30 on a Tuesday when something goes wrong.

That’s where culture actually lives.

Lean thinking makes this visible. Not through posters, but through how leaders respond to problems.

Do we look for blame, or do we look at the process?

Do we jump in with answers, or do we ask better questions?

Do people feel safe to speak up, or do they stay quiet?

I don’t believe that you build culture through words. You build it through repeated behaviour.

It’s polling day here in the UK, and it got me thinking about something we often talk about in Continuous Improvement and data analysis. Sampling.

In most situations, we don’t collect data from every single person, process, product, or transaction. It would take too long, cost too much, or would just be impractical. So instead, we take a sample. A smaller group that helps us understand the bigger picture.

That’s how most organisations operate too. Pulse surveys. Audits. Quality checks. Customer feedback. Time studies. All based on samples of data.

But elections are one of the rare occasions where we attempt to capture the voice of the entire population. Every eligible person gets the opportunity to contribute to the final result.

And that really matters.

Because the quality of the outcome depends heavily on participation. If large groups choose not to vote, the result may still be statistically valid, but it may not fully reflect the reality of the wider population.

There’s a lesson in that for organisations too.

If only a small percentage of people engage in surveys, improvement workshops, or feedback sessions, leaders need to be careful about assuming they have the full picture.

Good decisions rely on good data.
Good data relies on engagement.
And engagement starts with people believing their voice matters.

I’ve just realised something watching this…

In Peppa Pig, cycle helmets don’t protect your head… they protect your ears.

I mean, fair play, they’re fully committed. Strap it under the chin, job done… ears covered, head completely exposed. 😂

It’s one of those things you can’t unsee once you notice it.

All these years we’ve been talking about standards, safety, doing things properly… and Peppa’s out here redefining PPE.

Now I’m off to question everything I thought I knew about cartoons.
