Why should freelancers keep up with trends?🎥

It's easier than it sounds. Watch the runways, make the most of education moments, and follow the people you find most inspiring on social media (they don't have to work in hair, sometimes the best ideas come from somewhere else entirely).

Here's why it's worth the effort. Your clients are seeing the same content you are, and when they spot a look on a favourite celebrity, they'll come to you wanting a wearable version of it.

What trend are you going to take on next?👀

Pricing shouldn't be a guessing game.💷

As a freelancer, it's easy to focus on staying booked up and forget to check whether you're actually being paid properly for your time. You need to work out overheads, service costs and profit accurately, so you know exactly what each client is costing you once product, time and fuel are factored in. No more guesswork, just the real numbers, so you can protect your time and make sure you're never overworking yourself for too little return.🧮

Want to take this one step further and dive into your numbers more? We are holding a zoom for our members with on the 7th of September at 7:30 pm. Will you be joining us?🩷

Ever wondered when the right time is to specialise as a freelancer? 🤔

We sat down with Rachael Lomax, aka to talk about finding her niche, building a loyal clientele, and what she'd tell any stylist wanting to make their mark.

Her advice? Specialising should come from passion, not pressure. "It's what sets your soul on fire", the thing you'd happily do over and over, the one that keeps you experimenting and learning.

But she's also clear it's not about skipping the groundwork: build your foundation first, get confident in the basics, and let your niche reveal itself from there. As she puts it, "once you've found it, build everything else around it."

For Rachael, that was copper. An area barely taught in traditional training, which she turned into both a signature style and an education platform of her own.

So, do you have a niche or specialism as a freelancer? Would you niche down? If so, what would you specialise in? Let us know below!

ONE INDUSTRY. ONE VOICE. 🤝

The FHA has joined forces with the because we believe that when our industry comes together, we have a much stronger voice.

The current campaign is calling for a reduction in VAT for salons. While this may not directly affect every self-employed hair professional, we believe it’s important that the freelance sector stands alongside the wider industry.

Because what happens to one part of our industry matters to us all.

We are stronger when we stand together. Stronger when we speak with one voice. And stronger when government hears just how important the hair and beauty industry is.

🎥 Hear from FHA Founder Sheila Abrahams and find out why we're asking our freelance community to get behind the campaign.

Please support the campaign and add your voice.
