First Measure draws on the medieval mass dials hidden within my local church in Appleby Magna, where time was once tracked through light and shadow before the standardisation of mechanical clocks.

Using couched thread, I impressed these symbolic contours into porcelain, translating these early timekeeping marks into scar-like surfaces that echo stretching, pressure, and change.

Part of an ongoing body of work exploring the history of clockmaking in Appleby, First Measure considers how time was first understood through observation, repetition, and the movement of the sun.

Hi, I’m Bex, and I thought it was high time we had a bit of a catch up.

After having my first son in 2021, I returned to my art practice, creating mixed media pieces with paper, stitch, and clay. It reignited my joy in creativity, connected me with an incredible art community, forming friendships with some seriously talented humans. But deep down, I still felt like I wasn’t fully connecting with my work. Like I was holding something back.

Fast forward 3 years, 1 wedding, and another baby, and I’m finally pursuing a long-held dream of becoming a fully fledged ceramic artist and firing my own porcelain pieces.

I have the clay. I have the kiln. I also have the fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of failing. But it’s a fear I’m determined to move through.

This year, I’ve signed up again for my good friend ‘s ‘Sketchbook to Series’ course (it’s so good, I’m doing it twice!) to help hold me accountable — and for the opportunity to exhibit my work .

I’d love to hear what dreams you’re following at the moment, and how you’re showing up for yourself. Let me know in the comments 👇🏻

I am so excited to start 2024 with some fantastic news - a selection of sculptural pieces from my latest collection 𝘍𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘥 𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘴 are being exhibited in ‘The Small Picture Show’ from 10th January - 10th March (open 10-4 Wed-Sat).⁣

I’m so pleased to be exhibiting alongside my fellow Spaces to Create artists, resident artists and members of Hatchery Nottingham.⁣

If you’re planning a visit, please let me know beforehand - I often work from the gallery’s balcony space and would love to meet you there! ⁣

When I go for local walks around my home, I wander footpaths through countless farmers’ fields across Charnwood. It’s a joy to watch the changing seasons, but especially a joy when the plough and the weather work in harmony to reveal fragments that have been hidden by time. ⁣

Pocketing these fragments that give a glimpse of the past, that are grounded in the location they were found, I am now combining these time capsules with imprinted clay (and sometimes stitch) in my new collection of miniature mixed-media sculptures. ⁣

The first of a new sculptural series I’ve been working on behind the scenes - 𝘍𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘥 𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘴 ⁣

I’m one of those people on a walk whose pockets are filled with treasures found along the way. These little treasures represent a time and place that I want to hold onto and capture. ⁣

Are you a treasure hunter like me? What would you find in your pockets right now? Acorn caps? A shell? A broken piece of pottery? (Yes, I discovered all of these and more in mine right now! 😂)⁣

Day 17 of
Today’s theme is ‘New Found Skill/Technique’

Tracing paper can be a really tricky medium to work with as it doesn’t have the same qualities as ‘normal’ paper. I love blind embossing but for a long time I couldn’t combine this with my love of transparency and therefore layering with textiles. Much experimentation later, I’ve finally found a way to ‘emboss’ this tricky material. It takes a lot of patience and an incredibly delicate touch, but by hand embossing over the edge of carefully cut card, I’ve found a way to achieve a subtle embossing. This is a technique I am excited to push further and to continue experimenting with within my mixed media pieces.

Highs and lows. Peaks and troughs. Navigating through life’s undulations can be a bit of a rollercoaster.

After a few knock-backs, it’s lovely to know that I have two pieces in Secret Postcard Show 2023. All postcards in the show are original pieces of art and are just £20! Both of my pieces portray the topography of the Heights of Abraham in the Peak District. You can browse available pieces over on their Instagram page and bid to purchase your favourites and support this wonderful gallery.

Have you ever heard of blue mind science?

Marine biologist Dr. Wallace Nichols () popularised Blue Mind science - studying the neurological effects of being near/in/on/under water and has revealed the positive impact water can have on our mental and physical health.

Living in the midlands, I do love the peace and tranquility you can find at the edge of lakes and reservoirs.

“[Water] makes up nearly 70% of our bodies, and constitutes over 70% of our heart and brains,” says Nichols. “This deep biological connection has been shown to trigger an immediate response in our brains when we’re near water. In fact, the mere sight and sound of water can induce a flood of neurochemicals that promote wellness, increase blood flow to the brain and heart and induce relaxation. Thanks to science, we’re now able to connect the dots to the full range of emotional benefits being on,in, or near the water can bring.”

Here is a close up of a recently completed piece called ‘At the Water’s Edge’ inspired by mindful walks around Charnwood Water and other local lakes and reservoirs.

I’ve realised something.

I’ve realised that the more I delve deeper into this series of work, the more I am drawn to working three-dimensionally. I suppose it should come as no surprise given that in a previous life I used to transform two dimensional textiles into three dimensional costumes.

It feels like I’m bringing my artwork to life. If you’d like to hear more about my sculpted pieces, DM me to be added to my mailing list.
