Looking back to Thursday’s wonderful gala concert at Wycliffe Hall with soprano Eliana Pretorian, tenor Matthew Rengert and pianist Horacio López Redondo.
I first met Eliana in 2015 at Glyndebourne, when she was singing Frasquita in Carmen and I was in the chorus. I have admired her singing and artistry ever since, and it was a real pleasure to be invited to join her for this recital - a joyful evening of music, celebration and friendship.

Looking forward to joining my friends at St Paul's Sinfonia next week to sing in the last movement of Vaughan Williams’ Pastoral Symphony, conducted by John Andrews.
The programme also includes Grace Williams’ Penillion, and Avril Coleridge-Taylor’s piano concerto with soloist Samantha Ege.
I last performed with St Paul’s Sinfonia back in 2024, when I sang Sibelius’s epic tone poem Luonnotar and Tom Coult’s exquisite song cycle Beautiful Caged Thing, and I will be performing with them again this autumn - more on that in due course! 👀 In the meantime, do join us next week for this lovely programme if you can.

This is the last three minutes of Britten’s War Requiem, filmed during our rehearsal on Saturday with Lewisham Choral Society. It’s the most ravishingly beautiful music. The tenor and baritone soloists repeat the words “let us sleep now”, the last line of Wilfred Owen’s poem Strange Meetings, while the children’s chorus, main chorus and soprano soloist sing the Latin text of In Paradisum - "May the angels lead you into paradise; may the martyrs receive you at your arrival and lead you to the holy city Jerusalem. May choirs of angels receive you and with Lazarus, once a poor man, may you have eternal rest."
It’s really worth watching all the way to the end - the final chord is simply magical, as you’ll see by the look on my face!
Seen and Heard International reviewed the performance, saying “Lewisham Choral Society and a first-rate trio of soloists delivered a fine War Requiem..this performance left its mark”.

I am really looking forward to this very special concert in April!

Lewisham Choral Society is proud to present Benjamin Britten’s magnificent War Requiem, one of the choral masterpieces of the 20th Century. This deeply moving work was commissioned for the consecration of Coventry Cathedral in 1962, built to replace the original 14th Century building which was destroyed in World War 2.

Britten, an ardent pacifist and conscientious objector, chose to intersperse the text of the Latin Requiem Mass with the heart-rending anti-war poetry of Wilfred Owen, a soldier who died in battle just one week before the end of World War 1.

The music is electrifying, with punchy rhythms and complex melodic lines. This powerful and poignant work takes us through a gamut of emotions - from its opening sense of foreboding and menace through pity, sorrow and anger culminating in a final moment of tranquility.

A work of this size and complexity requires a vast array of musicians: while the Mass is performed by Lewisham Choral Society, KölnChor and Rheinischer Kammerchor Köln, The Emerald Choir and soprano soloist, the poetry is performed by tenor and baritone soloists. The singers are also accompanied by two orchestras from Forest Philharmonic Orchestra, organist James Orford and no less than three conductors - definitely an event not to be missed.

So looking forward to singing my first Gutrune with The London Opera Company in October! Hope to see you there!

Following sold out and critically acclaimed performances of Tristan und Isolde, Die Walküre and Siegfried, the London Opera Company returns to Sinfonia Smith Square (formerly St John’s Smith Square) on Sunday 19 October with a full orchestra for its most ambitious concert yet - Götterdämmerung.

The production features a high-calibre cast of seasoned professionals including Katie Lowe, who made her Royal Opera House (ROH) debut in Die Walküre earlier this year, and Philippa Boyle, who returns as Gutrune following a wonderful Sieglinde for The London Opera Company in 2023. Philippa also performed for the first time at ROH in their award-winning Festen.

They are joined by fresh voices to Wagner and an orchestra with a core of professionals playing alongside the best post-graduates from London’s top music colleges.

Peter Selwyn conducts the orchestra, which is led by Katherine Shave. This follows their recent collaboration in Opera Holland Park’s Der fliegende Hollaender, which earned five star reviews.

The Wagner Tubas, kindly loaned by the Royal Opera House, will, as with the Company’s much celebrated production of Die Walküre, bring a special grandeur to the performance.

Siegfried

"This Siegfried was a remarkable achievement, which bodes well for the company's
Götterdämmerung next year…So gripping was the final scene. If only every performance outside an opera house could be like this." (The Wagner Journal)

Die Walküre

“The London Opera Company is set to perform Siegfried next year, and, based on the strength of this Die Walküre, it is an extremely enticing prospect…In a very short period of time The London Opera Company have shown themselves to be leaders in Wagner” (OMH review)

Reviews for Tristan und Isolde

“Remarkably good…this concert performance gripped the audience…an intensely emotional climax.” (Opera Magazine)

“This performance was a love song to Tristan…The singing was world class” (Wagner News
