So after my last post, I learned many exciting new things about myself.
Apparently I’m anti-progress, anti-technology, and personally standing in the way of the future. A lot to process, honestly.
Jokes aside, I want to say this calmly and with respect.
I understand that AI may be the way forward, and I agree it has a place as a useful tool. I also genuinely respect that people have different opinions on this. This is simply where I stand.
One argument I see a lot is that AI makes art more accessible. Personally, I don’t believe that’s quite true. I see it more as a shortcut. Art is already accessible. You can pick up a pencil and paper anywhere, at any time, and there are countless brilliant beginner tutorials available for free. Art has never been locked away.
What surprised me was how quickly my stance turned into a critique of the art I make, as if being against generative AI meant I was claiming my work is better. I’m not saying that at all. I’ve never claimed to be a “good” artist. I’m a learning one, always trying to improve.
Where I personally struggle is with generative AI replacing human artists, especially for things like branding, book covers, and published work often because someone says they’re “not an artist” and don’t want to invest to collaborate with one. And that’s the part that matters to me.
If you can’t create the artwork you need yourself, then collaboration should be the answer.
I also want to acknowledge that digital art isn’t traditional art, and I respect skills I personally don’t have. Digital art was once dismissed as “not real art,” and I’m not here to decide what art is or isn’t.
I’m simply saying there’s a difference between typing a few prompts (which also come with environmental costs) and spending hours developing an image from start to finish with intention, experience, and human hands.
That’s my perspective. You’re absolutely allowed to have yours.
I just happen to stand on the side that’s against generative AI–produced artworks, while still believing technology can be used thoughtfully and responsibly.
