There is something deeply satisfying about a cottage that has clearly prepared for winter — that has its woodpile neatly stacked beside the door, its fire already burning, its lamp lit and steady above the entrance — and is now receiving the first snowfall of the season with the quiet confidence of a place that has seen this all before and is entirely ready.

The thatched roof wears its new layer of white with the ease of long practice. The leaded windows glow amber across three floors — not just the lower ones but the dormer windows too, pushing up through the snow-covered thatch like small warm eyes opening in the dusk. A garden bench sits beside the door, dusted with snow, patient. The dry stone walls on either side of the path are capped in white. Behind and beyond the cottage, the fields and the hills have been softened into one continuous pale undulation, the trees standing leafless and dark against the blue-grey sky.

The snow is still falling — slowly, steadily, with that particular winter calm that descends over everything when the flakes are large and unhurried. The world has gone quiet. The chimney smoke drifts straight upward into the still air. Inside, the fire is burning. The woodpile will last the night. Everything that needs to be done has been done.

This is what winter preparedness looks like. And it is beautiful. ❄️🪵
