Sega takes legal action against individual accused of harassing employee

Sega has revealed it sued and won a case against a serial harasser of one of its staff, and intends to do the same on behalf of all employees.
The developer said the unnamed individual had conducted "slander and extreme acts of harassment" on social media toward the employee, prompting legal intervention as the situation escalated.
With the court's permission, the company obtained the harasser's personal information and sought damages on the victim's behalf. The individual has been ordered to delete all of its harassing posts and not do it again in the future.
Sega went on to call harassment against developers a "serious problem" and pledged similar legal action would be taken against any other malicious behavior against its staff.

Report: Microsoft and Activision Blizzard launch studio focused on franchise spinoffs

A new Windows Central report claims Microsoft and Activision Blizzard quietly opened a new studio. Its purpose? Developing and releasing spinoffs of popular Activision Blizzard franchises.
The outlet spotted several King employees updating their LinkedIn profiles reflecting the shift to a new team. Further, their sources allege this studio is tasked with making smaller double-A games, like how Nintendo treats Mario and Zelda.
At time of writing, it's unclear what systems these hypothetical titles will release for, given King's status as a mobile studio. Likewise, it's unknown what ABK franchise would be this supposed new team's debut project.

Korean devs report a burst of interest in single-player console and PC games

The traditionally online and free-to-play-based game industry of South Korean game development may be shifting gears. According to a recent report from Wesley LeBlanc in the final issue of Game Informer, developers at multiple studios like Round8 Studio, Shift Up, and Pearl Abyss are seeing signs that players at home and abroad are attracted to single-player experiences on PC and console.
LeBlanc reached out to developers after seeing these companies releasing single-player games like Round8 Studio's Lies of P, Shift Up's Stellar Blade (published by Sony Interactive Entertainment), and Pearl Abyss' upcoming Crimson Desert. Even longtime online and mobile publishers are spreading their platform wings, with Nexon subsidiary Neople soon releasing the single-player The First Berserker: Khazan, and NCSoft bringing the free-to-play PC game Throne and Liberty to consoles in September.

Spiders employees secure boosted wages, better remote work policies

Workers at Greedfall 2 developer Spiders have secured improved salaries and remote work policies a week after threatening to go on strike.
In a statement sent to Game Developer by Spiders management, the company stood by its previous claim that statements about poor conditions at the company made by the Video Game Workers Union (STJV) were "false and defamatory"...before announcing that the studio had negotiated new pay raises and other improved quality-of-life policies with employees.
The company agreed to workers' demands for increased wages, announcing that it is raising the minimum salary at the company by 11 percent starting in September 2024, retroactive to April 1, 2024. This amount was proposed by studio management and "aligned" with the requests of the union delegation. The average employee will see a three percent salary increase as a result of this pay bump.

UK studio nDreams confirms layoffs could impact 17.5 percent of workforce

VR studio nDreams is conducting a round of layoffs that could impact 17.5 percent of employees.
The company said a "challenging VR games market" requires a "renewed strategic focus" that will result in job cuts.
The UK firm operates four studios and is known for working on titles like Far Cry VR, Fracked, Phantom: Covert Ops, and Synapse. According to the nDreams website, it currently employs over 250 people across a variety of hybrid and fully-remote roles.
The downsizing comes less than a year after nDreams was purchased by Swedish conglomerate Aonic for $110 million in what was described as a "landmark" deal.
