Two of Britain's most senior retired Army generals have launched a new campaign urging MPs to strengthen legal protections for veterans who served during the Northern Ireland Troubles.

The campaign, called Shoulder to Shoulder, is asking Parliament to amend the proposed Northern Ireland Troubles Bill so that former soldiers cannot face repeated criminal investigations or prosecutions over the same incidents unless new evidence comes to light.

Supporters of the campaign argue that repeated investigations are unfair to veterans who have already been through legal scrutiny. They also warn that concerns over potential future legal action could affect military morale and recruitment.

The Ministry of Defence says it remains committed to ensuring members of the Armed Forces are properly protected within the law.

💬 Do you think the law should provide greater protection for military veterans while still allowing new evidence to be investigated?

She is asking them to pay us instead of the other way around 😂

She’s right, we built their countries and took them out the Stone Age. They claim they didn’t like being colonised by the British but are all falling over themselves to live here.

We have paid reparations for years in aid. The rest have been paid by being allowed to come here and live with us and reap the benefits of being here.

Living amongst us is not a right. It’s a privilege. They have been paid their reparations ten times over.

It’s about time they showed some appreciation and paid us back for everything we’ve did for them

The timing could hardly be more awkward for Reform’s Treasury spokesperson.

🇬🇧 British history is already taught in schools, but debate continues over whether pupils receive enough time to understand the people, events and decisions that shaped the country.

Supporters of a stronger focus say young people should learn more about Britain’s democracy, monarchy, industrial development, world wars, empire and changing society.

Others argue that history lessons should remain broad and balanced, including local, European and world history as well as both Britain’s achievements and its more difficult chapters.

For many parents and teachers, the real issue is helping pupils understand the past using evidence, context and different perspectives.

💬 What do you think?

Should schools devote more time to British history while continuing to teach wider world history?

Please keep the discussion respectful.
