It’s hard not to love films about films, but these horrors about the filmmaking process? Dizzifyingly scary.

We’ve rounded up the creepiest horrors that explore filmmaking, ranging from allegories on fame and obsession to questions around real and false identities.

From their first feature on online vlogging (We’re All Going to the World’s Fair), to their second on the lasting effects of a surreal TV show (I Saw the TV Glow), director Jane Schoenbrun’s third feature directorial outing graduates on to a film about a horror franchise.

At over a square-metre, this larger-than-life drawing is at once monumental and intimate, powerful and tender. Claudette Johnson is celebrated for her figurative drawings of Black women and men, often drawing friends, relatives, and herself from life.

In this work from 2024, the artist has filled the expanse of the paper with a closely cropped depiction of herself in vibrant shades of blue oil pastel. Rather than seeing her work as replicating a likeness, Johnson understands her practice as capturing presence.

Some areas of the composition remain open or unresolved, others are carefully detailed, like the shading around the eyes, ears, and mouth, the outline of the vest, the delicate pieces of jewellery. In this way, Johnson's figurative study depicts a sense of self and identity that is always in process - always expansive, and never fixed. Her work is a testament to how drawing can hold movement and becoming.

As Johnson says, her interest is in “giving space to Black women's presence, a presence which has been distorted, hidden, and denied."
