We were delighted to welcome global bestselling historian Yuval Noah Harari and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa to the 5x15 stage earlier this week, moderated by investigative journalist Carole Cadwalladr.

At a moment of extraordinary technological and political change, they came together to ask some of the most urgent questions we face: about the rise of AI, the future of democracy, the changing nature of power and information, and how prepared we really are for what comes next.

Drawing on her new book The Fight Back, Maria also made the case for human agency and our capacity to resist, act and shape the future rather than simply accept it.

An important and unforgettable evening.

We’re delighted to launch 5x15 Icons, a new series of online conversations with some of the world’s most influential thinkers and cultural figures.

For our first event, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Guns, Germs, and Steel Jared Diamond joins award-winning journalist Gillian Tett to mark the publication of his new book, Profits, Prophets, Coaches and Kings.

Moving beyond the traditional “great man” theory of history, Diamond asks a deceptively simple question: when do leaders really make a difference? Drawing on politics, business, sport and religion, he investigates the conditions under which leaders genuinely change outcomes — and when circumstance matters more.

From Seretse Khama and Genghis Khan to Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela and Jeff Bezos, Diamond offers a fascinating new way of thinking about leadership, success and what it really takes to make an impact.
