In Sophieâs words:
âSydenham Hill Wood is a favourite place for myself, my family and our dog. We have wandered under its cooling oaks and hawthorns over a few decades, and the main creatures we see are parakeets, crows, pigeons, foxes, bugs, dogs and fellow walkers.
When I was thinking about this show, and local animals, I decided to begin with a poetry constraint. I got out my notebook and started to look for all the animal names I could create from the letters of Sydenham Hill Wood.
I was surprised to find a hyena, a whale and a few swine in the woods, as well as all the other beasts you see depicted. The only likely local one I drew was the toad; but of course there is no T in Sydenham Hill Wood.
The limited choice of letters being an aid to focusing the mind, I wrote this poem, which I hope you will agree has a soundscape all its own, omitting as it does, so many familiar consonants.
I was grateful to the animals in the poem for addressing me, and as this was so unexpected, it seemed to warrant a change of colour. They gave me excellent advice which may, if we listen to them, help us all steer a path through the (real and imaginary) woods.â
These limited edition works were printed in collaboration with Suki Hayes-Watkins.
Sophieâs new prints can be found at the gallery amongst many other creatures in our group exhibition âAnd Other Animalâs which continues until 2 August.
