Brook Green Festival of Books The Brook Green Festival of Books is a celebration of lively writing for lively minds - Nov 11-21

The Brook Green Festival of Books aims to engage, provoke and amuse, bringing together authors and appreciative west London audiences. This year’s programme includes War Horse author Michael Morpurgo and his biographer, Maggie Fergusson, the Costa Book of the Year winner Andrew Miller on exhuming the – fictional – dead, and historian Kate Summerscale on the scandalous diaries of an undutiful Victo

rian wife. Lovers of adventure will enjoy Artemis Cooper’s talk about her new biography of the irrepressibly dashing Patrick Leigh-Fermor – who, as an undercover agent in Nazi-occupied Crete, abducted a senior German general. And we’ve invited columnists Ferdinand Mount and Harriet Sergeant to look closely at our big broken society, from the oligarchs at the top to the street gangs at the bottom. Last year’s Festival highlight was Edward Fox’s performance of The Four Quartets. This year, the thirst for poetry will be slaked at an evening programmed by Allie Esiri and Rachel Kelly, two local founders of the spectacularly successful iF poetry app. For the first time, we will be staging events at the new Bush Theatre on the Uxbridge Road, as well as at Holy Trinity Church on Brook Green. Profits from the Festival will support the local work of the charity Volunteer Reading Help, which helps children who struggle with reading.

Standing room only last night at Alan Johnson event, at which the former Home Secretary shyly confessed that didn't smoke dope in his youth because "I didn't go to university". But he popped a Purple Heart or two down the Hammersmith Palais...or was it the Apollo? Interviewer Jonathan Ford of the FT barely batted an eyelid, and nor did the audience, transfixed by the great man's tales of the squalor of 1950s Notting Hill. ("Darling, what IS a purple heart?")
