WHAT YOU GAVE ME
(A Tribute to the Parents Who Gave Us More Than Things)
by Dee Denizen
August 29, 2026
[Verse 1]
You worked beneath the morning sun,
You carried burdens one by one,
You gave your strength, you gave your time,
So we could dream, so we could climb.
But you never taught us to chase gold,
Or measure life by what we hold.
You said, A happy heart is rich
When you have enough and share the little bit.”
[Pre-Chorus]
You gave us more than a roof above,
More than a table, more than love.
You gave us eyes to see beyond
The things that shine and soon are gone.
[Chorus]
What you gave me, I will carry on,
Long after all the years have gone.
To be a good person when nobody sees,
To lend a hand without asking for a fee.
To love my country, honor where I'm from,
And respect the roads of everyone.
To live with courage, to live with grace
And leave a little kindness in every place.
That is the treasure you gave to me,
More precious than possessions could ever be.
If I can live the way you taught me to,
Then every sacrifice you made came true.
[Verse 2]
You taught me not to take words as truth,
To ask the questions I needed to.
To listen closely, then think it through,
To change my mind when the facts say to.
You taught me mistakes are lessons in disguise,
Not chains that keep us paralyzed.
Look back, learn well, then face the day
Don't build a home where your failures stay.
And when a little victory comes my way,
You taught me to stop and give thanks that day.
For every small step, every open door,
For simply having a little more.
Verse 3]
You said, Respect each person that you meet,
But don't surrender your dignity.
Be gentle, but don't let yourself be used,
Be understanding, but never be abused.
You taught me love is something I should give,
But loving myself is part of how I live.
For love should never ask me to disappear
The heart can be open without living in fear.
You taught me knowledge is a gift, not a throne,
Don't hide what could help somebody grow.
If what you know can brighten someone's way,
Then pass it along; don't keep it away.
[Bridge]
And you told me, Be kind, but keep your eyes open.
Not every promise is honestly spoken.
Some hands reach out because they want something back,
Some smiles hide a carefully calculated act.
So I learned to recognize the false and the true,
The ones who manipulate, the ones who use.
The smooth-talking stranger, the friend who deceives
The person who takes while pretending to give.
But you never taught me to become cruel,
Or answer deception by breaking the rules.
Stay civilized. Stay educated. Stay wise.
Let character be the strength in your replies.
[Verse 4]
Be proud of the soil that gave you your name,
Protect what is precious, honor where you came.
But don't let your pride make another seem small
Every land has a story, a people, a soul.
Learn from the customs beyond your own door,
Listen to traditions and understand more.
You can love your homeland with all of your heart
And still respect the world and the people apart.
[Final Chorus]
What you gave me, I will carry on,
Long after all the years have gone.
To be grateful for the little things,
For ordinary days and the joy they bring.
To serve without waiting for applause,
To stand for what's right because it's right.
To question what needs questioning,
And still choose kindness in the fight.
To love without losing who I am,
To rise again when life doesn't go as planned.
To know when to give, and when to say no,
To keep my dignity wherever I go.
[Outro]
Maybe I won't have everything,
Maybe life won't give me every dream.
But if I have enough to share,
A grateful heart and people who care,
If I can help someone along the way,
And learn something new from every yesterday,
If I can leave this world a little better than I found it
Then I have lived the lesson you surrounded me with.
So here's to the hands that worked until they were tired,
To the dreams you gave us when yours were retired.
You didn't just give us a wonderful life
You taught us how to live one right.
And when my own journey reaches its end,
I'll know what mattered, I'll know what I spent:
Not the things I owned,
Not the praise I received
But the lives I touched,
The love I gave,
And the person I chose to be.
That is what you gave me.
And that is what I'll give the world.
