Elizabeth "Liz" Harrison. Midfielder. Single minded footballer. Married to Ted in 1920. Is a realist like Grace but not a fatalist. Likes to think things through. Trusted confident of Amy the Captain

This musical is based on true events set over three timelines from WW1 through to the near future featuring the same characters. Three generations of women battle for their right to play football. Lotte, one of the main protagonists tells the story of her family which has produced generations of world class female footballers. As well as tales of loss, class discrimination and unrequited love we journey through the history of women’s football. From WW1 to the 1970s to a future where women players win equal status to men.

James "Jimmy" Cooper
Male romantic lead. Love interest of Lotte. Pals' Brigade Infantryman in WW1. 1914 era James was striker for Burnley United. He then volunteered for the army. 1970s era Jimmy is captain of Lanchester United. Doesn't realise his whole team are women in disguise. Falls in love with Lotte (as in 1914) not realising he is a she. Agrees to manage the team in Mexico.

Despite her experience she is patronised by her male co-host Gerald and has to fight to be heard. She is the voice of Women's football on TV and has to explain the game to the clueless Gerald who "is more of a rugby man"...

Augustus Maybury (aka Augustus Jones-Maybury in 1970s) Male second lead. 1914 era Augustus is the son of the factory owner, "nouveaux riche", and insecure in his class, and so rejects Grace as beneath him.. 1970s era Gus is the professional footballer fiancé of Grace. Plays left back for Liverpool. He has mellowed as his current position is based on his own footballing ability.

Female Second Lead

Grace is a realist and wants to escape poverty by marrying into money. 1914 era Grace tries to seduce Augustus (the rich factory owner’s son) but is ultimately rejected. In the 1970s era she is a footballer but has succeeded in marrying 1970s Augustus and so has retired from the game. She is persuaded to play again in Copa71 - the lost women's world cup.
