About Us

Carpenters Workshop Gallery transcends classical borders in terms of art and design.

Its proposal stands just at the intersection of these two universes: reaching precisely a symbiosis of art and design. Carpenters Workshop Gallery produces and exhibits functional sculptures by international rising and already established artists and designers going outside their traditional territories of expression. The gallery is actively involved in the research and production of the limited e

dition works exhibited. The choices are guided by the research of an emotional, artistic and historical relevance; a relevance that appears as an evidence. The gallery relies on the partnership of childhood friends, Julien Lombrail and Loic Le Gaillard. They first opened a space in London’s Chelsea in 2006 in a former carpenter’s workshop; they then followed with a second space in Mayfair in 2008. The opening of a 600 square metre space in Paris in 2011 in the heart of Le Marais district, an address steeped in history as it was previously occupied by the Galerie de France for several decades, was a return to their roots.

2015 marks a major turning point for the gallery with the opening of Carpenters Workshop | Roissy, a unique 8,000 meter square space dedicated to artistic research and development, bringing together the elite of artisans, an homage to the French heritage of ‘Arts Décoratifs’. Carpenters Workshop Gallery London at Ladbroke Hall is the latest step in the gallery’s remarkable development. This new space opening in April 2023 confirms the leadership and dominant position of the gallery in today’s international territory of art and design. The artists represented by the gallery are:

French artist Léa Mestres challenges a design world she sees as overly serious and male-dominated. Through play, humour and whimsy, she creates colourful, larger-than-life sculptures that offer a glimpse into her vivid imagination. See her work in Small Car, Big Windows, opening 11 June at Ladbroke Hall, London.

Opening soon | The Language of Glaze

Born in Kyoto, Shimizu Uichi drew inspiration from Song Dynasty ceramics before establishing his noborigama (climbing kiln) near Lake Biwa in 1970, where he developed his signature iron-glazed works. He was named a Living National Treasure in 1985 for his mastery of tetsu-yū (iron glaze). The works featured in the show, never previously exhibited, have been held in the artist’s family’s private collection since their creation.

Opening soon | California Poppies

California Poppies is a solo exhibition devoted to multidisciplinary artist Roger Herman, recognised as the West Coast parallel to the 1980s Neo-Expressionist movement. Presented at our Los Angeles gallery, the exhibition brings together Herman’s expressive paintings and ceramic works, where flowers and mountains unfold through vivid colour and texture rooted in close observations of the natural world.

Mumbai-based designer and artist Ashiesh Shah presents Taamr, his first solo exhibition in the UK. Anchored by copper as both material and idea, the exhibition reflects Shah’s contemporary sculptural language rooted in simplicity, tradition, and the revival of Indian crafts.

Opening soon | Small Car, Big Windows

Small Car, Big Windows brings together the distinct yet deeply complementary worlds of Martin Laforêt and Léa Mestres. Through sculptural furniture, lighting and collaborative works, the exhibition balances Laforêt’s sharp architectural lines and Brutalist influences with Mestres’ vivid colours, tactile mosaics and organic surfaces.

Lightness of Form continues Terence Woodgate’s exploration of reduction, precision, and movement through a series of works developed with Formula 1 engineer John Barnard. Using carbon fibre as both a structural and visual language, the pieces balance lightness with strength, creating forms that feel exacting, minimal, and quietly dynamic.

Our presentation at TEFAF New York features a curated exploration of metal as a living material, shaped through processes of precision, experimentation, and craft. Through lighting, seating, tables, and sculptural works, the exhibition highlights how material experimentation continues to redefine functional objects as works of art.

Bringing together over 12 artists and designers, the presentation highlights some of the most distinctive voices in collectible design today, including Marc Newson, Rick Owens, Nacho Carbonell, Maarten Baas, and Vincenzo De Cotiis.

Now open | Material Intent

Material Intent features lighting sculptures by Léa Mestres, whose practice is rooted in joy and play. Between Paris and Audierne, she reimagines functional objects through whimsy and nostalgia, turning them into expressive, characterful forms.

The exhibition also brings together works from our international roster, exploring light, material, and form through contrasting approaches and visual languages. Artists include DRIFT, Zanine Caldas, George Nakashima, Vincenzo de Cotiis, Maarten Baas, Ingrid Donat and more.
