Introduction to FUREASTEEN’s “Kasiochinatone”
FUREASTEEN is a lo-fi electronic / experimental music project formed in mid-1990s London by Tomokazu Date (aka Tom Dante). Japanese art students gathered every Sunday in a flat near King’s Cross, improvising and recording with cheap Casio Casiotone keyboards, a Roland SH-2000, pedals, and basic equipment. They jokingly called their sound “Japanese Craft Design Techno,” “Kasio Musik,” or “Electric Zen Sound” — defiantly lo-fi, handmade, and full of fragile, dreamy textures.
“Kasiochinatone” is a track from their long-lost debut album Kasiotelemusik, recorded in London around 1996 and finally released for streaming in 2024 after nearly 30 years. It is often described as hypnotic techno or ambient — “a musical landscape of sleep and peace.”
The song was inspired by a rainy evening walk through London’s Chinatown in Soho. Looking at a faded paper kite hanging in the window of a closed herbal medicine shop, the artist felt as if a voice whispered something about returning to a dream sea. Later, sitting at an old Casio keyboard, a strangely Eastern yet synthetic and nostalgic melody emerged. It is not authentic Chinese music, but a “virtual Orient” — a memory of a memory, a Western city’s dream of the East, filtered through rain-soaked alleys and cheap synthesizer tones.
The track blends deep, hypnotic toy-like Casio tones, creating a quiet, meditative, and slightly surreal atmosphere. Perfect for relaxation, sleep, or contemplative listening. Remix versions, such as the Deep Bongo Remix, have also been released in recent years.
