Keep in Touch by Nadia Sirota & Nico Muhly

♻️ from Bedroom Community • Ten years of Keep in Touch. A reason to listen twice.

Nico Muhly’s writing influenced Nadia Sirota’s playing. Her input influenced his writing. Keep in Touch lets us hear that exchange in two forms.

On Nico’s Speaks Volumes, Nadia’s viola sits within electronics made with Valgeir Sigurðsson, including the small sounds of her own playing. For the version released in 2016, Chris Thompson translated that sound-world into parts for Nadia and Alarm Will Sound.

The 2016 album pairs that ensemble version with Nico Muhly’s Viola Concerto. Two works shaped by a collaboration between composer and player.

♻️ from International Anthem • 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗵 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗻 - “𝗜𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲”

Chicago-raised and Los Angeles-based composer, producer, saxophonist and synthesist Josh Johnson (SML, Jeff Parker ETA IVtet, Flea and The Honora Band) shares “𝗜𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲” today, a new track from his forthcoming solo album 𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 (out October 23 on physical formats and digital download, with streaming release to follow on November 10, via International Anthem / Nonesuch Records ).

On “It Can Be Everywhere” Johnson creates a dreamscape with glittering synths, ethereal saxophone pads, and elegiac saxophone/violin melodies. The track has more in common with Cluster, Bitchin Bajas, Tangerine Dream, or Michael Hoenig’s classic Departure from the Northern Wasteland than with any jazz standard. Repetitious low-end synthetics and oscillating tonal polyrhythmics build to a hypnotic drone for Johnson’s intimate sax melody to sit atop, eventually overtaking the listener’s focus and transmuting into an almost orchestral high-register siren ring, no doubt due in part to violin contributions from Macie Stewart .

Johnson says of the track: “‘It Can Be Everywhere’ is both statement and prompt — to imagine something greater, beyond where we currently stand, and to know that we can also carry that imagined place with us.”

The track also comes via video filmed and directed by Mikel Patrick Avery , who doubles down on the dreamscape with visions of a masked family doing domestic duties, nature walks, and dancing in their living room, all over long, Fellinian stares through the fourth wall.

The composition is a meditation on the properties of light, altered perception, and hallucinatory experiences. Inspired the work of American visual artist and long-term MASS MoCA artist James Turrell and his manipulation of light as an artistic medium, this collection of miniatures explores parallel acoustic phenomena, marveling at the intangibility of both light and sound, their rejection of the concrete and the real, and the sensorial power they wield over our human experience.

Nadia Sirota joined Stewart Hurwood for Lou Reed Drones at Tanglewood

Laurie Anderson presents a drone-based sonic experience utilizing guitars from her late husband Lou Reed‘s collection. The installation, curated by Reed’s former guitar technician, Stewart Hurwood, places the instruments in an arrangement against a group of amplifiers so that their tuned feedback creates an enveloping drone of harmonics that shifts and changes, depending on the audience location.

♻️ from Christopher Rountree • In less than two weeks, my piece ‘For Martha (Variations on a Theme by Leonard Bernstein)’ has its concert debut with Martha Graham Dance Company, Anna Handler Orchestral Conductor and Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood!

I wanted to share a little about the story behind the piece, which grew from just 49 seconds of unfinished music by Leonard Bernstein.

The album consists of five recordings from five different sessions all around Los Angeles and Ventura County – outdoors in the hills of Ojai with a view of the Topatopa Mountains, an intimate living room setting in Elysian Park, in an Oak Tree Cathedral at the Churchill Orchard in Ojai, a Garden of Electronics in the courtyard of an Echo Park home, and a recording session under a pepper tree at Elsewhere in Topanga Canyon.
