Very proud to have been awarded DYCP funding from Arts Council England to develop my craft across this year π It's been a magical & enriching journey π€ I feel clearer in my voice, mission and craft and more inspired than ever to MAKE BRILLIANT THINGS with AWESOME PEOPLE β€οΈ
The funding was to develop my playwriting by building skills through complementary practices like poetry and clowning, along with mentorship, writing time, workshops, artists dates and more.
A week at studying poetry through incantations, spells and blessings with the extremely awesome and witchy π
π» Helen Ivory was particularly pivotal. As was the unhinged gift shop at Stonehenge as part of one of my 'dates' to fill the well of images and ideas. Tapping into my weirdness with made me want to pack it all in and move to France to go to clown school π€‘π€‘π€‘
I can already see a huge difference in my writing & in my creative practice more broadly. I'd been a couple of years recovering from horrendous burnout, trying to get my practice back to a place that feels nurturing and alive, rather than pressured and fearful. Pulling the focus away from outcome and 'career' towards process and artistry.
Rick Rubin puts it best: "Living life as an artist is a practice. You are either engaging in the practice or youβre not. It makes no sense to say youβre not good at it. Itβs like saying, βIβm not good at being a monk.β You are either living as a monk or youβre not. We tend to think of the artistβs work as the output. The real work of the artist is a way of being in the world."
All that said... I'm looking forward to stepping into 2026 more boldly and armed with loads of KNOWLEDGE! UK & Irish theatre artists looking for creative consultancy and collaboration on your next project get in touch! π
