Can the worst times in our lives also lead to the best?

We often talk about mental health struggles as lost time, but what if they are actually the seasons where we are most deeply under construction? The hardest chapters—the ones where we felt completely broken—are often the ones that force us to strip away who we thought we had to be and finally meet who we actually are.

For a long time, I carried the weight of my mother’s expectations like a burden I couldn’t drop. It was a "really complicated" relationship, defined by a constant tug-of-war between who she wanted me to be and who I actually was.

Then one day, I stopped seeing her as just "my mother" and started seeing her as a flawed human being, just like everyone else in the world.

• She was a woman who followed the rules because of the "horror" of what happened if she didn't.
• She was a woman trying to keep me safe using the only map she had—even if that map was outdated.
• She was a woman whose pride and pressure were two sides of the same coin: a desire for me to belong to a world she understood.

When I realized her expectations weren't an indictment of me, but a reflection of her own history, the pain started to lose its grip. I could finally love the woman who wore that frayed green sari without letting her blueprints define my life.
